* The Hanover Research Council developed a weighted criteria system to identify and rank peer institutions for Humboldt State University. They began with institutions drawn from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and filtered that list by student body size (5,000-10,000), control (public vs. private), degree-granting status (undergraduate and master's), and Carnegie basic classification (Master's S, M, L). Those institutions were then awarded points, with a maximum total of 100 possible, when the following factors fell within predetermined percentage points.
Size classification Full-time students Program mix Out-of-state students
Setting/Remoteness Diversity Transfer students SAT scores
High School GPA Total revenue Total in-state price (cost of attendance)
Total out-of-state price (cost of attendance) Campus residence
Data was drawn from several sources including College Board, College Navigator, Carnegie Classifications and IPEDS.

**The Common Data Set (CDS) initiative is a collaborative effort between four major college guide publishers and the higher education community to develop a standard set of questions and data definitions for use in surveys that gather information for college guidebooks, rankings and other resources for prospective students. The purpose is to improve the quality and consistency of information, while easing the burden on colleges who receive many survey requests each year. The four publishers who have provided the leadership for this initiative are: The College Board, Peterson's, U.S. News, and Wintergreen/Orchard House.
