CAHSS Technology Policy

The CAHSS Technology Committee

The CAHSS Technology Committee is a body of faculty and staff charged with advising the dean on areas regarding technology and equipment issues. This committee is advisory only.

Statement of Direction

Technology has proven itself to be vital to all elements of research and teaching. The complexities related to the management and distribution of hardware and software expose the college to multi-level issues of budget, inventory control, and lab policy as well as academic technology support. This committee is directed by the CAHSS Dean to advise, design and recommend processes that will enhance the college’s use of technology equipment and support materials. It is the goal of this committee to advise the dean on equitable and thoughtful use of materials and resources that benefit the college as a whole.

CAHSS Technology Committee Recommendation

CAHSS Technology and Equipment Policy:

  1. Before programs develop new or refresh equipment requests they will submit a Computer Equipment Proposal to the Dean's Office which will be vetted by the Technology Committee and the Budget Committee who will make recommendations to the Dean.
  2. Proposals should be in narrative form describing the type of equipment, the number of units, the programmatic justification, and how use of the equipment will be tracked. Proposals will also address where the equipment will be housed, access and oversight issues as well as reasons why curricular goals cannot be accomplished in other facilities on campus.
(As a supplement to these policies: Read the overview for Computer Equipment Proposals. Additionally, a Computer Equipment Proposal Template in MS Word doc format is posted here.)
  3. The recommendations from the Budget Committee, ITC Office and Technology Committee will address cost, implementation, support and feasibility of the proposal.
  4. Each department shall provide the Dean the following:
    • Contact information for department representative/spokesperson.
    • Operational policy reflecting usage (classes and units hosted in lab), security, accessibility, and cost management policy for supplies and materials.
    • Equipment and software inventories.
    • Refreshment, needs, and projected needs plans.
  5. Departments are encouraged to find external funding for start up and maintenance costs.
  6. Departments are encouraged to avoid redundancy by recognizing duplication of goals and materials including software, hardware and facilities. Cross discipline training will be reviewed by the Budget Committee, ITC Office and Technology Committee to avoid duplication.
