Viruses: How to scan your whole computer, or individual files

Here's how to manually start a virus check your computer with Symantec (Windows) or Norton (Macintosh) AntiVirus. Please note that the Autoprotect feature of your Antivirus program, when enabled, scans every file you open or even "touch."


Windows 2000 / XP

Scan your computer

  1. Open Symantec AntiVirus (Start -> Programs -> Symantec Client Security -> Symantec AntiVirus)
  2. Verify the virus definitions are updated
    1. Click the LiveUpdate button.
    2. Click Next
    3. Click Finish, once LiveUpdate has completed.
  3. From the Scan menu, select Full Scan.
  4. Click the Scan button
  5. Allow the scan to run uninterrupted. A Full Scan can take hours, depending on the speed of the computer, and the number and size of the files being scanned. You may wish to run the scan while you are at lunch, or in a meeting.
  6. Take note of the results when the scan window reports scan complete. If threats are discovered, the current status should be Quarrantined. Contact cahssitc@humboldt.edu for further assistance.


Windows 2000 / XP

Scan an individual file:

  1. Right-click the file to display a speed menu.
  2. Left-click Scan for Viruses...
  3. The file should complete the scan in seconds.
  4. Review the results in the minimized scan complete window. If threats are discovered, the current status should be Quarrantined. Contact cahssitc@humboldt.edu for further assistance.

Macintosh OS X

Scan your computer

  1. Open Norton AntiVirus (From the Finder, Go-> Applications -> Symantec Solutions -> Norton AntiVirus)
  2. Verify the virus definitions are updated
    1. Click the LiveUpdate button.
    2. Click Update Everything Now
    3. Click Quit, once LiveUpdate has completed.
  3. From the Norton AntiVirus window, select Disk View.
  4. Click the Hard Drive you wish to scan .
  5. Click the Scan / Repair button
  6. Allow the scan to run uninterrupted. A Full Scan can take hours, depending on the speed of the computer, and the number and size of the files being scanned. You may wish to run the scan while you are at lunch, or in a meeting.
  7. Take note of the results when the scan window reports scan complete. If threats are discovered, the current status should be Quarrantined. Contact cahssitc@humboldt.edu for further assistance.

Macintosh OS X

Scan an individual file:

  4. Navigate to the file or folder you wish to scan, and highlight it by clicking on it.
  5. Click the Scan / Repair button
  6. The file should complete the scan in seconds.
