How to add a network printer

A step-by-step how-to add a network printer, for the following operating systems:

Windows 2000 ® / Windows XP ®
Mac OS X

Windows 2000/XP ® Faculty and Staff in the College AHSS.

1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. In the dialog box named “Open” enter the following text, including the two back-slashes (the last character is the numeral 1) or Click this link: \\AH-PTRSVR1
4. Click OK
5. Browse the list for your printer (it follows a schema of dept., name, room #, type of printer, and sometimes the operating system - 2000 or XP) (View screenshot of the Printer list)
6. Double click the printer(s) that you want to install. You will only have access to printers in your department. The "searching" flashlight will animate, and then a window (the print spooler) will open. Close this window by clicking on X
7. The printer has been installed.
8. Close the PTR-SVR1 window, when you have installed your department printers.

MacOS X ®

1. From the Apple menu, open System Preferences...
2. Click on the Print and Fax
3. With printing bubble highlighted, click Setup Printers
4. (You may have to click the lock to make changes )
5. Click Add or the + sign
6. In the top bubble select IP Printing
7. Next bubble Printer Type select LPD (or Line Print) /LPR
8. Next bubble Printer Address enter numerical IP Address (usually on a label on the front of the network printer)
9. In the last bubble Printer Model select the appropriate printer type if listed, if not listed, select Generic
