Coping with Spam

We use a hacksaw to cut the stuff, then fry it in oil. Just kidding, but how best to cope with ever-increasing spam? Here are some tools:

Barracuda - the University Spam Firewall.

Barracuda is a server that pre-screens your email before it hits your Inbox.Every email address/user has personal settings that can be individually set.

Log in, and then check your spam settings at https://barracuda2.humboldt.edu/cgi-bin/index.cgi

You can view our SPAM statistics in real time (available only from on-campus computers) at http://aspen2.humboldt.edu/cstats.asp Be patient. It can take a few refreshes to get the page to load with the amount of work our two Barracuda servers (CUDAs) do in filtering email.

Filter more spam with your email program

If you are choosing to have spam delivered, but marked as spam, tell your email client (Outlook, Mail, Eudora, etc.) to move mail marked as spam to a different folder.

Open the Help file on your email to learn how to create folders, and to automatically move incoming mail based on criteria you choose (such as "move mail with a subject line containing the word SPAM to folder Trash")

While you are reading about rules, you may be inspired to use rules to self-file more of your email than just SPAM. Perhaps make a rule such as " move mail with a sender containing your boss's name to folder Really Important Email, and then play a sound."
