Original meaning: Seal of authority.

In ancient times, the emperor, having broken a jade stone in half, would give the right half to his official to symbolize the extension of the emperor's authority. Thus, it was called a seal of authority. It served as a key or password to prove that one was indeed the proper official to receive a message or order from the emperor.
