The Business & Economics Student Club met with some of
our alumni on Friday March 30, 2007 in San Francisco. Before the
reception, the students visited the Federal Reserve.
In the summer of 2003 we conducted a survey of all alumni. We
received responses from a bit more than 21 percent of those who
received the survey.
Here are the results of that survey:
- Job, employer, and annual income:
Our alumni include presidents and vice presidents of businesses,
business owners, executive directors of organizations, professors,
teachers, engineers, managers, as well as those just starting out. Many
are employed by energy firms, computer and technology companies,
investment and financial planning firms, banks, government agencies,
colleges and universities, public school districts, nonprofit
organizations, and consultancies. Of course a good number of our alumni
are also retired. On average our alumni survey respondents receive
income of between $75,000 and $100,000.
- Year of graduation: Our
average alumni survey respondent graduated between 1979 and 1980, with
responses ranging from 1939 to 2002.
- Highest educational attainment:
On average our alumni respondents have at least some graduate or
professional training, and nearly half of our alumni survey respondents
received a graduate or professional degree. Most of the graduate
degrees were in economics.
- Graduate school: Of those
that attended graduate school, the most common graduate school choice
was the University of California Santa Barbara. Several respondents
received Ph.D's in Economics.
- Rating of how helpful your HSU economics
education was in preparing you for the future (5 point
scale where 1=very helpful, 5=very unhelpful): The average response to
this question was 1.64. Other than one respondent, answers were nearly
evenly divided between "very helpful" or "helpful".
- Rating of overall satisfaction with your
baccalaureate education in Economics at HSU (5 point
scale where 1=very satisfied, 5=very undissatisfied): The
average response to this question was 1.31 (all were "1's" or "2's"),
indicating that the majority of alumni responded that they where "very
satisfied" with their baccalaureate education in Economics at HSU. Some
alumni who received a master's degree from us asked that we rephrase
this question to include all degrees.
- Your forecast for the national economy in
2004 relative to 2003: The average response indicated a
weak recovery (on a 3 point scale where 1=stronger economic conditions,
0=unchanged, and -1=weaker economic conditions, the average response
was 0.53)
