Civicorps Charter School Internship
(Formerly EBCC School Internship)
This new partnership program, piloted in the 2005-2006 school year, will provide a small cohort of EED credential candidates with the opportunity of student teaching in Oakland, California at a small, diverse, elementary charter school focused on the integration of the arts across the curriculum and service as a way of learning. The partner school is the Civicorps Elementary Charter School, a small K-5 public school serving approximately 200 students of African American, Mixed Race, White, Latino, Asian American, Pacific Islander and Indian backgrounds.
The HSU/Civicorps partnership will involve faculty from the HSU Department of Education's EED program and the Elementary Level of the Civicorps Charter School in a collaborative effort of supporting, supervising and teaching credential candidates serving in Teacher Intern positions at the Civicorps Charter School. The purpose of the program is to provide HSU credential candidates with the training and experience necessary to (1) meet the learning needs of urban students from families that are ethnically, socioeconomically, religiously and otherwise diverse; (2) include the teaching of the arts in the classroom, both as a discrete subject and integrated with other subject areas of the curriculum; (3) use service-learning as a strategy to develop civic engagement and build school-community partnerships; and (4) provide site-based experiences which prepare new teachers to work in small, autonomous, mission driven schools that serve urban children and youth.
The participating HSU elementary education credential candidates will serve as Civicorps Charter School Teacher Interns, but unlike other intern programs across the State, the Civicorps Charter School Internship will not require a credential candidate to be the "teacher of record" for a particular classroom. Credential candidates will be placed as student teachers with their mentor teachers at the charter school. Credential candidates will also have many opportunities to work with parents, resource specialists, and other teachers at the school during the internship. The candidates will be enrolled as Civicorps AmeriCorps Education Award Only Members and will receive a $4,725 post education award to use toward tuition as well as a modest salary ($18,999) in exchange for 1,700 hours of service.
How will this work logistically? To summarize: The Civicorps Teacher Interns will participate in the August EED Foundations Seminars on the campus of HSU before they travel to Oakland to begin their internships at Civicorps. The EED Methods courses will be taught at the Civicorps school site, via distance learning. Teacher Interns will return to HSU during Winter Break to attend another week of EED Foundations Seminars onsite; and then will travel back to Oakland for the second semester of fieldwork and distance learning coursework.
If you are interested in applying for this opportunity, please indicate your preference for the "Civicorps Teacher Internship" on page 8 of the EED application.
