Announcements
- Graduate student Beckie Menten was awarded a Switzer Fellowship for the 2008/09 academic year for her work to reduce the environmental impact of energy use in the City of Arcata. Way to go, Beckie!
- Students from the Renewable Energy Student Union (RESU) submitted two successful proposals to the Humboldt Energy Independence Fund (HEIF) in March of 2008. The first proposal provides $95,000 for the installation of a 10 kilowatt photovoltaic system on the HSU campus. Students will play a central role in the design and installation of the system. The second proposal provides approximately $5,000 to upgrade HSU's Solar Radiation Monitoring Station.
- The Schatz Energy Research Center $33,000 in May of 2008 for work on the Lumina Project. The funds will be used to support a study of the use of lighting by market vendors in Kenya who sell products at night. The work includes a comparison of the use of kerosene lamps, which are widely used by market vendors, and newly emerging LED-based lamps. The effort involves collaborative work between faculty member Arne Jacobson and Evan Mills of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Graduate students Kristen Radecsky and Peter Johnstone are working on the project.
- The Schatz Energy Research Center was awarded approximately $422,000 over three years to explore the potential to use gasification technology to convert biomass, and especially sugar cane waste, into useful energy products. The effort, which is funded by the Indonesian Sugar Group, is a joint project with the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory of the University of California, Berkeley. EES and ERE graduate students are working on the project.
