Fine Art Drawing with Colored Pencil
If you are ready to explore, experiment, practice and have fun through the art of drawing this class is for you. Whether you are a student working on your portfolio, a teacher preparing to present art techniques in the classroom, or a community member who would just like to learn more about drawing, this class will offer you the overview of basic drawing techniques which will give you the foundation you need! Weekly demonstrations include: contour, drawing, shading, hatching, layering, indent, burnishing, razor-scrape, color-mixing, materials use and care, and composition. This class is for beginning through advanced students. Bring a 2B drawing pencil, kneaded eraser and two pieces of white paper to the first class. Barbara Pulliam, MFA, has been teaching in Humboldt County since 1990. Barbara teaches a variety of fine art media including drawing, painting and printmaking. She teaches for Extended Education at Humboldt State University, Community Education at College of the Redwoods, Northern Humboldt Union High School District Adult Education, McKinleyville Senior Center, and also offers private lessons. She is a working artist and exhibits her work locally and nationally. Studio tours are available by appointment.

Turn an ordinary hardcover book into an amazing work of art! Step-by-step demonstrations of techniques like glazing, collaging, stitching, and more will be presented at every class meeting. Make a family heirloom by incorporating family photos and special mementos. Make a book about a hobby or activity, your pets, a favorite artist, or follow a whim and create as you go! Individuals of all skill levels will appreciate this class; you don't have to be an artist to make a beautiful creation. No previous art experience necessary – just creativity and imagination! Please bring the following materials to the first class meeting: a 7" x 9" or smaller hardcover book (thrift store book), scissors, a pencil, transparent tape, and a stapler. A supply list will be distributed at the first class meeting.

Learn the fundamentals of Photoshop – layers, text, blending, filters, etc. – while you create original works of art. Learn how to combine your printed images with paint, glue, matt board and other multi-media materials to make two- and three-dimensional art. There are two types of projects in this course: Step-by-step projects designed to teach Photoshop skills and develop artistic awareness, and independent projects based on individual interests. Each class meeting will feature demonstrations of techniques by the instructor and allow work time. This course is designed for artists, photographers, computer enthusiasts and any other person with a creative spirit who wants to make art from their digital images.
Prerequsites: Good fundamental computer skills including using a mouse, creating/saving files, navigating menus, etc. Some knowledge of Photoshop would be beneficial, but is not mandatory. Material and supplies needed include a storage device (flash drive, CD, media card, etc.); digital images; misc. images to scan (copyright-free); matte board; frame (optional); misc. art supplies (paint, brushes, glue).

Justine Smith has an MFA in art from the San Francisco Art Institute, and a teaching credential in art from Humboldt State University. She has been teaching art to adults and children since 1997. Justine is a multimedia artist who enjoys making art incorporating sculpture, photography, graphic design, collage and painting. This 4-part course is designed to provide people who have little or no knowledge of Japanese with a good grounding in four basic language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). Part 1 and 2 are offered in this fall semester. Although the main emphasis will be given on listening and speaking, Japanese characters (Hiragana and Katakana) will be introduced to foster the all-around Japanese-language ability. Various aspects of Japanese culture and custom will also be discussed.

Conversational Russian 2

Nelya Riordan is a native speaker originally from the Ukraine. She taught language arts and cultural dance to elementary students in the Ukraine before coming to the United States in December 2003. As a member of a professional dance company, she traveled throughout Eastern Europe and the Middle East. She offers private Russian and Ukrainian language and culture lessons.
Part 1 This course introduces the concepts of Italian grammar and builds a basic vocabulary with which students will be able to communicate their ideas and travel needs. Italian culture will be examined through reading, the Web and other fun activities.

Part 2 This course is intended for students who are familiar with the basic grammar rules that were covered in the Beginning Italian class. After a brief review, we will use what we learned in the previous class to practice conversation and develop new vocabulary. Students will learn basic vocabulary which will enable them to engage in simple conversations; get directions and negotiate transportation (vaporetti, trains, etc.); read a menu, have a dialogue with wait staff, and order in a restaurant; shop in a market; and use the services available in the post office.
Prerequisite: Beginning Italian course. Use of the language lab is required by those registering for academic credit.
Textbook is available in the HSU Bookstore. To receive a passing grade, students will be required to complete Rosetta Stone 2 in the HSU language lab.

Advanced Conversational German
Have you been looking for an opportunity to use and strengthen your advanced German language skills? Would you like to get together with others to discuss recent social, cultural and political developments in Germany while stretching and strengthening your advanced language skills and developing your vocabulary? In this class you will increase your fluency in German, improve your listening and written comprehension, increase the use of more complex German sentence structures, learn how to express your own ideas in German and participate in a discussion, and learn about recent social, cultural, and political developments in Germany.
Subjects of discussion and selected readings will include the following topics: "Almost two decades after the unification: Is there still an East West divide?"; and, "The EU: Effects on German life, traditions, and welfare system."

Birgit Semsrott is a native German speaker originally from Germany. She has lived in the United States since 1989, but makes regular visits to Germany to visit with family and friends, and to stay in touch with all recent cultural, social and political developments of her birth country. Birgit has a Master's in biology from HSU. Last semester she taught German 105 at HSU. She offers private German language lessons to children and adults.

The FESCUE Conference invites students, educators and community members to participate in a day and a half of workshops, keynote speakers, panel presentations, book talks, readings by local and national authors, and interactive discussions on this year's theme: literacy and social justice.
This year's two common readings are Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis and Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner.
Students registered for FESCUE through Extended Education will become familiar with the full range of English studies today, and they will have an opportunity to consider the confluence of theory, practice and curriculum in the discipline of English.
Conference attendance fee is $75. One unit of academic credit is available for an additional fee of $75 (Total for conference, including credit: $150).
This course is also available for graduate level credit through the Open University program. There will be more course time and course work required.

Learn how to use digital cameras, color scanners and images from the web to enhance and enliven classroom teaching and learning. MediaBlender: Project-Based Learning with Multimedia
Explore the exciting possibilities of incorporating student-created multimedia projects into the curriculum, using MediaBlender, an easy-to-use multimedia authoring tool. MediaBlender allows students to create media rich presentations including text with hyperlinks, images, sound, animation, video and interactivity. Students can use MediaBlender as application software in the classroom, and access the online version outside of the classroom.
You will leave this class prepared with practical ideas that you will be able to immediately apply in your classroom. Among the topics this course will explore are the principles of project-based learning using multimedia, how to integrate multimedia technology into the curriculum, and how to manage and evaluate student produced multimedia projects.
As a part of this course, you will develop a project-based instructional lesson using MediaBlender.

Lori Dengler, Ph.D., chair of the HSU Geology Dept., began working at HSU in 1979. She has been director of the Humboldt Earthquake Education Center since 1986. Her research includes historic seismicity of the California North Coast, earthquake intensity studies, application of seismic refraction to surficial process studies and earthquake/tsunami mitigation.
Andre Lehre, Ph.D., has been a professor in the HSU Geology Dept. since 1981. His research includes mechanics of surface processes: hillslope erosion, hillslope hydrology, channel dynamics, sediment transport and sediment budgets.
Brandon Schwab, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the HSU Geology Dept. His research is focused on mantle partial melting and the formation of mid-ocean ridge basalts utilizing the techniques of experimental petrology. He teaches mineralogy, petrology and introductory geology courses.
This course is intended for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students interested in river fishes and approaches to restoring populations that have declined. The course covers the status of important anadromous fishes in the Pacific Northwest, reasons for their current status, and perspectives on river restoration. Ecological principles relevant to restoring declining populations of river fishes are stressed. Topics covered range from techniques for assessing watershed condition, to components of conservation hatcheries and the role of harvest in restoration.
Students must have access to a computer with Internet capabilities and will be expected to read one or more professional journal papers each week. Readings will be made available electronically. Students will also be required to write a proposal for restoration of one or more river fish populations. Students must register prior to the first day of fall semester, August 20, 2007.

Dr. Walter G. Duffy is the leader of the U. S. Geological Survey, California Cooperative Fisheries Research Unit and adjunct professor in the Fisheries Biology Dept. at Humboldt State University. He has engaged in research throughout North America on topics ranging from the aquatic food web of the Missouri River to invertebrate ecology in Arctic wetlands. For the past decade, he has been a leader in watershed restoration in California and has conducted extensive studies of Pacific salmon and steelhead. Dr. Duffy's interests in watershed restoration and the ecology of Pacific salmon led to his developing this course in restoration ecology.

Botanical Survey of our Coastal Redwood Region
Would you like to identify the most common plants of our local coastal redwood region and have an understanding of the ecology and natural history of the environment they live in? Would you like to know more about the impact of invasive plant species on native plant communities, and learn about medicinal and traditional uses of native plants? Travel to four botanically intriguing and diverse locales, the Arcata Community Forest, the Manila or Lanphere Dunes, the Arcata Marsh, and Redwood Roots Farm in Bayside with Birgit Semsrott and develop a new relationship with the botanical world in your own community.

Birgit Semsrott received her Master's in Biology in 2000 from HSU, where she taught Plant Taxonomy Lab classes for many semesters. She has been working as a botanist for a local consulting firm doing rare plant surveys of local forests. Birgit wrote a weed identification guide for Redwood Root Farm, and is currently enrolled in a 10-month Medicinal Herb study course. Birgit is in the process of starting her own consulting business for plant surveys, small-scale restoration, and native plant gardening.
