Marat-Sade:
Inside the Mind of Actor & Director
Experience the full breadth of the North Coast Repertory Theatre’s production of Marat-Sade, “a unique theatrical event based on two historical truths: the infamous Marquis de Sade was confined in the lunatic asylum of Charenton, where he staged plays; and the revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat was stabbed in a bathtub by Charlotte Corday at the height of the Terror during the French Revolution. This play-within-a-play is no mere historical drama – it is emotionally and politically relevant to today’s world and is packed with action, song and dance.” Explore the historical and socio-political aspects of the play. Additionally, learn about the playwright Peter Weiss and the original director, Peter Brooks, and his use of Bretchian-style theatre. Then attend the matinee.

Crash Glass:
the Good Tempered Shattered Glass
That’s right. The stuff we throw away. After a piece of tempered glass gets broken, its destination is usually the trash can. But not anymore! We will take these beautiful little islands of crashed glass and lay them over images. We will use a myriad of materials, including foils, glitters, tissues, beautiful gold leaf and lots more. Then set it all with non-toxic, water soluble epoxy, bake and grout. The result is fabulous. The flat everyday bits and pieces of life become the sacred. The mundane becomes iconoclastic. You will be inspired!
What to bring: Small images such as photos, greeting cards, post cards, postage stamps, fabric, magazine clippings, dried flowers, leaves, wrapping paper, anything flat. Lunch: Bring finger foods for a pot luck lunch for 8 people. (Bottled water, tea and coffee will be provided.)

Using painting, sculpture and music, search for the source of inspiration in the arts. Discover what message the artist hopes to convey, and why it matters in our lives. Using specific works from around the world and the local area, we will see if we can unpack the often obscure communication that is presented. We will see if we can understand what compels the artist to communicate in the first place. Talk with local artists and visit galleries. Our overriding concern will be to see if we can get glimpses of that most elusive art form: creative living.
