Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo: Pilgrimage to Tibet
Create something precious to inspire your family or your community after your death. Starting with an overview of the traditional Jewish custom of writing ethical wills, Rabbi Naomi Steinberg will guide participants in making documents or pieces of artwork that express each person’s deep values. Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo:
Pilgrimage to Tibet
In August 2007, local Unitarian Universalist minister Karen Harris was part of a two-woman film crew that journeyed to remote eastern Tibet to shoot footage for a documentary movie about Tibetan nunneries. The crew traveled with the British Buddhist nun, Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo. Jetsunma’s amazing life, including her 12 years on solitary retreat in a cave in the Himalayan mountains, is described in her biography, Cave in the Snow. Please join us for an evening of stories and photos of their incredible journey. This program will be a kick-off for Tenzin Palmo’s November visit to Berkley, Calif. This is a brief presentation of the basic beliefs of Buddhism. It introduces the foundational assumptions which underlie the many schools of Buddhism that currently exist. Some of the ideas will be familiar, while others will challenge us. The course will provide you with enough understanding of Buddhism to be able to pursue further studies on your own, if you choose. We will first consider Siddhartha Gautama, the man upon whom Buddhism is founded, and the historical context within which he lived. We will then consider various beliefs and doctrines which derived from the Buddha’s experience. Finally, we will briefly note the various major schools of Buddhism that currently exist.
Instructor will donate course fees to support HSU OLLI.
