From the intriguing Japanese ghost story Ugetsu, to the French New Wave classic Breathless with Jean-Paul Belmondo, watch critically acknowledged, unusual and classic foreign language cinema from around the globe. Learn about how the works of filmmakers from other cultures influenced or have been influenced by American cinema. Other films include the wartime Russian love story The Cranes are Flying and the Ingmar Bergman drama Persona. There will be a surprise film for a grand finale. Class will consist of a brief lecture introduction to the film, the director and the films of the relevant country. Then we will screen the film and follow up with question/answer discussion. Films are subtitled in English.

Philip Wright has a B.A. in English and an M.A. in theatre arts with an emphasis in film production from Humboldt State University. He taught film history at College of the Redwoods and has worked in local television production for more than 25 years. Recently he has hosted several film presentations for the Humboldt County Library’s Based on the Book film series.
All are welcome in this creative, informative and fun drawing class. Come draw in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. Learn basic ink drawing techniques through hands-on practice and instructor demonstrations. Included will be contour drawing, cross-hatch, stipple, texture shading, right-brain drawing exercises and more. Care and use of materials will also be covered. Students will provide their own art supplies. Cost will be approximately $10-15. A supply list and discount coupon will be handed out at the first class.

Barbara Pulliam has an MFA from California State Long Beach. She has been teaching in various places in Humboldt County for 17 years and is a working/exhibiting artist with her art studio in Eureka. Barbara is an award-winning artist with work in private collections around the United States, Japan and England.
