Take almost any course at HSU without being
admitted as a full or part-time student!

Open University can help you to:

• Update your professional training
• Embark on a career change
• Examine a new field before enrolling in a degree program
• Get a head start on a degree at HSU while you attend high school or community college
• Re-enter an academic program and try college-level work
• Take courses not offered through the Extension program
• Receive academic credit from an outstanding university

The HSU Open University program allows individuals who have not been admitted to the university to enroll in regular HSU classes on a space-available basis. Open University is not available to matriculated students (those officially admitted to and eligible to register at HSU during the current semester or the previous semester). If you plan to apply for admission to the University, be sure to check with the Office of the Registrar prior to enrolling in Open University classes.

Almost all of the courses in the HSU Schedule of Classes are open to you, provided that there is space available and that you fulfill any prerequisites. The registration process is easy. Admission to the University is not required, and the same fees apply to everyone.

Open University fees are subject to revision. Contact the Office of Extended Education for fees for courses not listed on this website.

Open University courses taken through Extended Education will not count in Undergraduate/Graduate units earned, grade point average or residence credit until you have applied for graduation. If you wish to have these courses added to your Undergraduate/Graduate units earned, grade point average and residence credit prior to that time, you must petition the Office of the Registrar.

A maximum of 24 semester units in Open University and special session earned through Extended Education in non-matriculated status may be applied toward a bachelor's degree, and not more than eight units may apply to the master's degree.

Easy Steps to Register

• Select the courses you want from the sample listing in the Extension bulletin or the regular HSU Schedule of Classes ... also available for $1.50 at the HSU Bookstore.
• Print and fill out the registration form (PDF).
• Obtain the instructor's written approval and the departmental approval. Registration is on a space-available basis.
• Return your signed form to the Extended Education Office and pay your fees prior to the second class meeting to avoid a $25 late fee.

Payment of Fees

The Office of Extended Education can accept payment by check, money order, cash or credit card. Please make all checks or money orders payable to Humboldt State University.

Full payment of fees is expected at the time of registration.

Open University fees are paid for at the time of course registration, prior to the second class meeting for the term. A $25 late fee is charged for late registration. See deadlines.

NOTE: Instructors may exclude a student from attending courses if the student cannot provide proof of registration for the course.
