Watercolor!

Students of all skill levels are invited to join this creative, informative and fun watercolor class. This class is structured to include community members, students working on their portfolios, teachers preparing to present art techniques in the classroom, and those wishing to explore, experiment, practice and have fun through the art of painting. Class emphasis is on a basic overview of watercolor painting including composition and experimentation in a relaxed atmosphere. Continuing students will be encouraged to explore new techniques and will receive individualized assistance. Weekly demonstrations include wash, wet-on-wet, dry brush, layering, color theory and more! This class is for beginning art students as well as continuing students. There will be new projects for the continuing students. Bring 11 X 14 or larger watercolor paper, drawing pencil, kneaded eraser, and any watercolor supplies you may already have to the first class. A supply list and discount coupon will be handed out then.

Barbara J. Pulliam, MFA, has been teaching in Humboldt County since 1990. Barbara teaches a variety of fine art media including drawing, painting and printmaking. She teaches for Extended Education at Humboldt State University, Community Education at College of the Redwoods, Northern Humboldt Union High School District Adult Education, McKinleyville Senior Center, and also offers private lessons. She is a working artist and exhibits her work locally and nationally. Studio tours are available by appointment.

Flamenco Dance Workshops

These two workshops focus on Sevillanas, which is the folk dance from southern Spain. It is an authentic Gypsy dance and is featured in the Feria de Abril which is a week-long festival held every April in Seville. With these workshops, we will strive to create our own festival! Flamenco is a dance you can dance alone, but often dance with a partner in a festival. The workshops are open to everyone. It’s a great social time for family and friends. Children and men are perfect for this form of dance, too! No dance experience necessary. It’s best to attend both workshops, as new material is covered each day.

Ku-Hsiang Lin earned a bachelor’s degree in child development from HSU. For the past six years she has studied the inspiring art of Flamenco dance and choreography. Her master teachers include Concha Jereno and La Tania from Spain. She participated in the Mi Fuego National Flamenco Contest in Taiwan in 2004 and 2005. Ku-Hsiang is eager to share her dance experience with others.

Mosaics for the Classroom

Explore teaching mosaics for students K-12. Learn basic tiling techniques and tools used for best practices in the classroom. In addition we will look at examples of historical and contemporary mosaics from around the world. Teachers will complete one or two grouted projects and receive a standards-based lesson plan. Discussions will include how to make a mosaic mural for your classroom or school, and integrating mosaics in subject areas such as history and math. Limit: 24 students. JoAnne Berke is the chair of the art dept. and professor of art education. She is an exhibiting artist who has shown in many museums and galleries throughout the United States. She has completed two mosaic murals collaborating with students in Hoopa and would love to share her experiences.

Reclaiming Goddess Traditions

This course is an in-depth look at the history of Goddess traditions and how current women’s spirituality movements have adopted aspects of them. We will examine whether there was such a thing as matriarchal or matrifocal society and what its spiritual aspects were. Pioneering women in modern day reclaiming traditions such as Marija Gimbutas and Starhawk will be studied. We will view Goddess images from around the world.

International Latino Film Seminar

In coordination with College of the Redwoods, a series of extraordinary films from the Hispanic world will be offered. The content and modes of representation will be compared and discussed. A one-hour lecture in English by faculty is presented before each film. Each film will be followed by a panel discussion. Short opinion paper required for academic credit. Non-credit attendance welcome. Pay at the door of the theater. $5/film for students with ID; $7/film for all others. Cost for films on a walk-in, non-credit basis is subject to change. Beginning Japanese I

Beginning Japanese 1 is a four-part course designed for people who have little or no knowledge of Japanese and who are well grounded in four basic language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. These are fast-paced courses and students are expected to participate in class. There will also be homework assignments and home study required.

Although the main emphasis will be on listening and speaking, Japanese characters (Hiragana and Katakana) will be used to foster all-around Japanese language ability. Various aspects of Japanese culture and custom will also be discussed.

All students must have the required textbook and workbook on the first day of the class. They are available at the HSU Bookstore:

Beginning Japanese Part 3

Spanish for Health & Human Services

This class is intended for health/human services professions where English-Spanish interpretation is needed. Introduction to key terminology in the field. Practice elements of interpreting. Everyday Spanish conversational fluency is required or three years of college Spanish. Nine class meetings.

The Testing Center offers proctoring services for correspondence exams for the community.

There is a $20 per hour charge for non-students and a $10 per hour charge for students.

This free course offers teachers of young children the opportunity to increase their awareness of their professional skills in action, in relation to children, families, co-workers and administrators. Participants will identify the specific gifts and talents they bring to their classrooms, become more aware of the personal values that influence their approach, and reflect on real-world ethical dilemmas that are difficult to address in a crowded work day. They will place their self-improvement within larger and larger contexts, asking, “What elements of my job support the work I want to do, and what things present barriers?” They will learn about advocacy tools to make their programs “a great place to work.”

This training is free. One unit of optional credit (CD x280) is available through the Office of Extended Education, Humboldt State University, for a $40 fee.

Photoshop Elements: Digital Imaging in the Classroom

Learn how to use digital cameras, color scanners and images from the web to enhance and enliven classroom teaching and learning. Through hands-on activities, you will gain practical ideas that you will be able to immediately apply in your classroom. Explore how digital cameras and scanners work, basic photo editing techniques using Adobe Photoshop Elements, and how to integrate the use of digital images into the curriculum. iMovie: Digital Video in the Classroom

Bring learning to life using digital video in your classroom. MediaBlender:
Project-Based Learning with Multimedia

Explore the exciting possibilities of incorporating student-created multimedia projects into the curriculum, using MediaBlender, an easy-to-use multimedia authoring tool. MediaBlender allows students to create media rich presentations including text with hyperlinks, images, sound, animation, video and interactivity. Students can use MediaBlender as application software in the classroom, and access the online version outside of the classroom.

You will leave this class prepared with practical ideas that you will be able to immediately apply in your classroom. Among the topics this course will explore are the principles of project-based learning using multimedia, how to integrate multimedia technology into the curriculum, and how to manage and evaluate student produced multimedia projects.

As a part of this course, you will develop a project-based instructional lesson using MediaBlender.

This is an introductory course open to all K-12 teachers. You should have basic computer skills (e.g., word processing, email, basic Internet skills). Stephen Zvolner has an undergraduate degree in secondary education in physics and an M.S. in physics. He has worked for the past 18 years as a technologist and computer expert and has been teaching graduate multimedia courses at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota where he has also conducted faculty development workshops on the use of digital media in the classroom.

Wild by Nature

An Environmental Education Retreat

Combining a scholarly approach with an indigenous perspective, Wild By Nature offers either 2.5 or 3 units* of university credit to learn environmental education on site in Orleans on the banks of the Klamath River. Morning lectures are augmented with afternoon and campfire activities. This course offers professional development and curriculum building. Teaching from a multi-disciplinary approach, Wild By Nature focuses on biology, botany, riparian studies, native plants, environmental policy, environmental history, Gold Rush history, Native culture, basketry, art and language. As a model for teacher education and community sustainability, the retreat serves as a forum for eco-tourism and eco-education, thus preserving the integrity of local culture, history and natural treasures.

Pets 101: Caring for Your Cat or Dog

For many of us, our cat or dog is more than just a pet – they are a member of our family. This class will provide you with the tools you need to care for your cat or dog. Classes will begin with the basics of choosing a pet, then follow through a pet’s stages of life. Training, neutering, disease prevention, nutrition, parasite control, travel, activities and behavioral issues will all be covered. Basic first aid methods will be explained and demonstrated. Jeff Kelley-Day, DVM, has been a practicing small animal and zoo veterinarian in Eureka since 1977. He has interests in orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, ultrasound and pet population control. He is probably most well known for being Bill the Chimp’s personal veterinarian for 30 years.

Iyengar Yoga for Beginners

If you think past injuries or present health problems have to keep you out of a yoga class, think again. Iyengar yoga — often nicknamed “chiropractic” yoga or “furniture” yoga — is a unique style of yoga that uses props to facilitate correct body alignment, works with ailment sequencing, and relies on longer “pose” hold times. These three areas make Iyengar yoga accessible to every level of ability, age and physical condition and make it a natural compliment to many other popular types of yoga.

In this class, we’ll use various props such as chairs, blankets, blocks and straps to help us explore the therapeutic side of yoga. We’ll discuss the history of yoga and the current research that shows how a regular yoga practice often results in overcoming stiffness, improving posture, and reducing or eliminating aches, pains and common ailments.

By the end of our time together, each participant will also have an outline for a daily routine, tailor-made for your particular problem areas, which can be done in the comfort of your own home! Please bring a yoga belt and mat, one blanket (5-6 sq. ft.), and an open heart.

Cyndy Phillips, M.A., has practiced Hatha yoga for the past 10 years; however, it is her recent 2-year study of Iyengar Yoga with senior Iyengar teachers in India, Mexico, and the United States, which has re-defined her approach to yoga. She now teaches classes based entirely on the principles of Iyengar Yoga. Cyndy is certified to teach yoga through the Yoga Alliance.

Tsunamis on the North Coast

An introduction to historic and prehistoric tsunamis of North Coast California. Friday intro-duction to the geologic setting and tsunami terminology. All day Saturday field trip tours sites in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties impacted by past tsunamis. Particular emphasis on the 1964 tsunami in Crescent City and paleotsunami evidence of past tsunamis on the Cascadia subduction zone. A short project is required. Lori Dengler, Ph.D., chair of the HSU geology dept., began working at HSU in 1979. She has been director of the Humboldt Earthquake Education Center since 1986. Her research includes historic seismicity of the Calif. North Coast, earthquake intensity studies, application of seismic refraction to surficial process studies and earthquake/tsunami mitigation.
