Turn an ordinary hardcover book into an amazing work of art! Step-by-step demonstrations of techniques like glazing, collaging, stitching and more will be presented at every class meeting. Make an heirloom by incorporating family photos and special mementos. Make a book about a hobby, your pets, a favorite artist, or follow a whim and create as you go! Digital Collaging
This course is designed for artists, photographers, computer enthusiasts and anyone with a creative spirit who wants to make exceptional art from digital images. Learn the fundamentals of Adobe Photoshop – layers, text, blending, filters and more – while you create original works of art. Your Photoshop images will be combined with paint, glue, paper and other multi-media materials to make 2- and 3-dimensional art. Each class meeting will feature instructor demonstrations and hands-on work time. Prerequisites: Fundamental computer skills such as using a mouse, creating/saving files, navigating menus, etc. Some knowledge of Photoshop would be beneficial, but is not mandatory. A complete list of materials and supplies will be distributed at the first class meeting.

Justine Smith has an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, and an art teaching credential from HSU. She has been teaching art to adults and children since 1997. Justine is a multimedia artist who enjoys making art incorporating sculpture, photography, graphic design, collage and painting. Justine is a practicing artist and exhibits her work in local galleries.
Drawing Basics & More
This course is designed to welcome and include YOU — community members, teachers and students. All “skill” levels are invited, from basic beginners through advanced. You will learn from weekly instructor demonstrations: composition, contour/line drawing, shading, hatching, texture, right-brain techniques, negative/positive drawing, visual examples, use and care of materials and more. Join in for a relaxed, informative experience. Discover, challenge yourself, experiment and find the joy of drawing.

Barbara J. Pulliam, MFA, has been teaching in Humboldt County since 1990. Barbara teaches a variety of fine art media including drawing, painting and printmaking. She teaches for Extended Education at Humboldt State University, Community Education at College of the Redwoods, Northern Humboldt Union High School District Adult Education, McKinleyville Senior Center, and also offers private lessons. She is a working artist and exhibits her work locally and nationally. Studio tours are available by appointment.

Part 1 This course introduces the concepts of Italian grammar and builds a basic vocabulary with which students will be able to communicate their ideas and travel needs. Italian culture will be examined through reading, the Web and other fun activities.

Beginning Italian Part 2
Part 2 This course is intended for students who are familiar with the basic grammar rules that were covered in the Beginning Italian class. After a brief review, we will use what we learned in the previous class to practice conversation and develop new vocabulary. Students will learn basic vocabulary which will enable them to engage in simple conversations; get directions and negotiate transportation (vaporetti, trains, etc.); read a menu, have a dialogue with wait staff, and order in a restaurant; shop in a market; and use the services available in the post office.
Prerequisite: Beginning Italian course. Use of the language lab is required by those registering for academic credit.
Textbook is available in the HSU Bookstore. To receive a passing grade, students will be required to complete Rosetta Stone 2 in the HSU language lab.

Home Stay Program
IELI at Humboldt State University invites you to become part of the home stay team helping international students reach their goals as they study English as a second language.
Ages of students vary from 18-55. New students start the IELI program every two months, so homes are needed on an ongoing basis. Length of stay varies with the student's goals and your own requirements.

Antigua, Guatemala
Spanish Language & Cultural Immersion Program
July 14-28, 2008
Join Eureka Adult School counselor Monica Rivera, a former 20-year resident of Guatemala, for two-weeks of immersion in the language and culture of the colonial town of Antigua, Guatemala. Language instruction is provided by the Union School of Antigua, the same school that prepares Peace Corps volunteers for fieldwork in Guatemalan communities. You will receive one-on-one instruction to ensure that you receive the attention and practice required to truly learn Spanish at your own pace.
The program cost includes round trip airfare out of Arcata/McKinleyville, transportation within Guatemala, lodging and breakfast each day, Spanish language class, field and side trips, and weekend trips. Stay in the Hotel-Museum Uxlabil, which is one block from the Central Plaza and three blocks from the Union School of Antigua.
Additional included adventures are weekend trips to Tikal and Lake Atitlan; a guided climb up the volcano Pacaya; coffee, macadamia nut and orchid farms; artisan factories of jade, silver and textiles; art galleries and museums; churches and cathedrals; markets; and salsa and meringue dance lessons.
While many of those who are joining this excursion are educators, it is not a pre-requisite for the program. It is important that you either attend a pre-trip orientation meeting or receive an orientation from the program coordinator, Monica Rivera, prior to registering for the program.
Program cost is approximately $2,000 per person.
Five units of academic credit are available through the Office of Extended Education at Humboldt State University for an additional fee of $200.

Need to take a professional exam?
Humboldt County residents who need to take professional exams face not only the expense of the exam, but out-of-county travel, hotel and meal expenses.
Arriving to the exam exhausted from travel may result in poorer exam performance. In many cases, one can arrange to take these same exams here at home, through the Humboldt State University Testing Center.
The Testing Center offers proctoring services for correspondence exams for the community.
There is a $20 per hour charge for non-students and a $10 per hour charge for students.

Introduction to the Healing Arts of Emei Qigong
Emei Qigong was developed in China in 1227 A.D. when an enlightened monk combined 3,600 schools of thought, philosophies and techniques that he learned from his spiritual teachers. This system was devoted to maintaining excellent health and treating diseases, while striving to attain the goal of enlightenment. Until recently, Emei Qigong was only practiced by monks.
Qigong combines conscious exercising methods allowing one to reach an optimal physical, mental and emotional state.
Through movement, meditation and lecture, you will learn the basic concepts of Qigong and Yin-Yang. Experience Qi in your body and enhance the power of your energy fields. Begin to understand the causes of illness and learn how to prevent illnesses that energy healers often pick up from working on their clients. Learn how to harmonize your heart and other organs with internal massage from healing sounds. Learn six rules for effective healing and discover how to be balanced, content and happy.

John Yamas began studying yoga in 1969. He earned his Masters in Education in guidance and counseling psychology from the University of Hawaii. He earned a certificate in Oriental medicine from the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1986. John became a Calif. licensed acupuncturist in 1986 and earned his doctorate from SAMRA College of Oriental Medicine in 1988. He started his private practice in Arcata in 1988. He began studying Qigong in 1995 and studied in the U.S., Canada and the Philippines. John completed the teacher training for the healing arts of Emei Qigong in Emei, China in 2006.

Travel Writing & Ethnography
Examine the craft of travel writing as a sub-discipline of print journalism. Learn how to write about travel destinations, diverse cultures and personal quests. George Estrada, Ph.D., is a professor of journalism at HSU, and advises the award-winning Osprey magazine and the Humboldt Travel Journal. He has written extensively about the Philippines for Filipinas magazine, the California Examiner and the Philippine Times of Las Vegas. He has also written two books about his travels there.

This workshop is designed to present the biological, chemical, hydrological and ecological fundamentals of constructed wetlands and to present the design criteria and design examples of constructed wetland technologies. The application of the wetland treatment technologies will be presented within the framework of watershed management at the urban, rural, and natural resource scale.
Faculty will be experienced consultants, researchers, and regulator representatives.
Three units of CEU are available for professionals and 3 units in Engineering 480/580 are also available for credit.

Wild by Nature: An Environmental Education Retreat
Combining a scholarly approach with an indigenous perspective, Wild By Nature offers either 2.5 or 3 units* of university credit to learn environmental education on-site in Orleans on the banks of the Klamath River. The learning experience is augmented with afternoon and evening activities, such as river rafting, salmon refuge restoration, and a traditional salmon bake. This course offers professional development and curriculum building. Teaching from a multi-disciplinary approach, Wild By Nature focuses on biology, botany, riparian studies, native plants, environmental policy, environmental history, Gold Rush history, Native culture, basketry, art and language. As a model for teacher education and community sustainability, the retreat serves as a forum for eco-tourism and eco-education, thus preserving the integrity of local culture, history and natural treasures.

Both sessions run 8 a.m -5 p.m & 7:30-8:30 p.m.
Fee for each session is $435, plus $40 per unit for Humboldt State University credit.
This retreat is family-friendly and students are welcome to bring guests to all activities for a participation fee of $75 per person for the week. Youth activities and daycare will be available.

Native Bees of Local Gardens & Farms
Bees play vital roles in wild, garden, and agricultural settings – yet we know very little about our local bee communities. This course is an introduction to the natural history and diversity of our local native bees. Students will learn how to identify common species, how to prepare professional voucher specimens, and how to create bee-friendly habitat conditions. Instruction will include microscopic examination of bees in the laboratory as well as field trips to nearby sites. The ultimate goal of the course is to prepare a group of enthusiasts who would be willing to participate in on-going surveys of our bee communities.
Materials needed for course: standard insect net, kill jar, a supply of #2 insect pins, a box suitable for storing specimens, and a pair of good quality forceps [Students should contact the instructor (mrm1@humboldt.edu) two weeks before the course begins for advice.]
Note: Students must be willing to make collections, requiring the killing of a limited number of bees.

Michael Mesler, Ph.D., is a Professor in the biological sciences dept. at Humboldt State University. “My research interests fall into three sets, reflecting the idiosyncrasies of my development as a biologist: mating biology of ferns; evolutionary consequences of hybridization; and pollination ecology. These days most of my work is centered on the interactions between flowers and pollinators. Recently I have developed a tremendously fun obsession with bees. Northern California is so rich in native plants and bees that I feel like I am in pollination heaven.”
Pete Haggard received a bachelor’s degree in wildlife management from Humboldt State University. He has collected, photographed and identified thousands of insects of the Pacific Northwest and maintained a database of hundreds of insect species. He is co-author of Insects of the Pacific Northwest and has contributed to several other publications.
