PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (TEACHERS):
MOSAICS FOR THE CLASSROOM

Create mosaics for individual projects and group murals for K-12 students. Learn basic tiling techniques and tools used for best practices in the classroom. In addition we will look at examples of historical and contemporary mosaics from around the world and in Humboldt County. Teachers will complete one or two grouted projects and receive a standards based lesson plan. We will also discuss how to make a mosaic mural for your classroom or school.

ME & MINE (Ages 3-4, parent/guardian) Creative Exploration
Children and "theirs" will explore patterns in painting, printing and paper collage. All of the co-creations will be assembled in a hand made book. Each project is designed for the parent and child to explore and create pieces together. Parents will learn how they can encourage and nurture their child's creativity and joy in making art.

LEVEL I (Ages 5-6) Beetles, Bugs and Butterflies
This class will focus on the basic structure and theory of art, color, and design. Students will explore different mediums such as acrylic and tempera paint, pastels, and plaster gauze. We will be creating drawings, paintings and sculptures inspired by insects and the natural world with an emphasis on color and spatial awareness.

LEVEL II (Ages 7-8) Story Book Box
This class offers students an exciting opportunity to create 2- and 3-dimensional art pieces while exploring a variety of materials and techniques including drawing, painting, sculpting and collage. Students will bring to life an original story by creating characters and a setting using a “Shadow Box” art form inspired by the art work of Joseph Cornell.

LEVEL III (Ages 9-10) Power Animals and Figures
Students will learn about contemporary and traditional sculpture methods while studying local and global three dimensional art practices. Masks and figures whose creation was inspired by powerful traits of animals and humans will be focused on. Drawing, painting and sculpting among other mediums will be utilized to create a figure or mask.

LEVEL IV (AGES 11-13) Fantastic Comic Book Art
Re-invent yourself as a comic book character and we will guide you through a fantastic experience in perspective, line, color, shape and figure drawing. This class will take you on a journey into the world of heroes and heroines where extraordinary experiences are an everyday occurrence. The class will culminate in the construction of a one-of-a-kind collaborative comic book featuring the characters created in class.

LEVEL V (AGES 14-18) Mixed Media Acrylic Art
Students will explore contemporary and innovative methods of acrylic paint application. Through book art and portraiture students will explore various art concepts and skills including marbling, mixed media and texture.


MORRIS GRAVES MUSEUM OF ART/ After School Classes

Winter Term: Jan. 22-March 13

LEVEL I (Ages 6-8) Mixed Media
This class will focus on the exploration of combining art materials to create interesting two-dimensional projects that are age appropriate. Emphasis on the Elements of Art (color, line & shapes) and the Principles of Design (unity, pattern & balance) will build the students’ artistic vocabulary and fundamental skills. Media will include oil & chalk pastels, watercolor & tempera paint.

LEVEL II (Ages 9-12) Mixed Media
This class will focus on the exploration of combining art materials to create interesting two-dimensional projects that are age appropriate. Emphasis on the Elements of Art (color, line, & shapes) and the Principles of Design (unity, pattern & balance) will build the students’ artistic vocabulary and fundamental skills. Media will include graphite & colored pencils, oil & chalk pastels, watercolor, tempera & acrylic paint.

Spring Term: April1-May 22

LEVEL I (Ages 6-8) Patterns & Textures
This class will focus on the exploration of utilizing patterns and textures to create interesting two-dimensional projects that are age appropriate. Emphasis on additional Elements of Art (color, shapes, & line) and Principles of Design (contrast, unity, & balance) will build the students’ artistic vocabulary and fundamental drawing & painting skills. Media will include oil & chalk pastels, watercolor & tempera paint.

LEVEL II (Ages 9-12) Patterns & Textures
This class will cover a variety of age appropriate two-dimensional projects focusing on drawing and painting techniques.
