Even though there has not been a Tsunami in Crescent City since 1964, the following instructions are important for you to read and follow in the event of a Tsunami [tidal wave]

Earthquake/Tsunami Instructions

Be Alert

1.                 If you feel a major earthquake, a tsunami may follow very soon.

+ If you are in a hotel or motel room, check with the front desk for further information.

+When the tremors stop, listen for the warning siren [sound of a warbling or pulseating sound for three full minutes]. Go quickly uphill [north on Hwy 101 towards Brookings] or North on any lettered street in Crescent City at least to 9th street or the Fairgrounds and wait there until you are notified by authorities that it is safe to return.

+If unable to walk, carpool with others if possible. If unable to carpool, notify one of the police or fire vehicles that will be cruising up and down the streets.

+Do your best not to hinder emergency vehicles or block any of the streets or highways.

2.       Do not return home or to your motel room after the first wave as additional waves may follow the first one. Some times, the second or third wave may be larger and more dangerous than the first one. Never go to the beach, jetty, dock or along the coastline to watch the tsunami. They move faster than a person can run and numerous waves may occur quickly or be spaced quite some time apart. REMEMBER, don't consider the danger over until you hear the ail-clear sound on the siren.

3.       When the warning siren sounds, do not call 911, the police or fire department due to their need to respond to the emergency.

4.       The siren will be tested the second Tuesday of every month at 10 AM. The Test will consist of a steady sound for 3 minutes and a pulse tone for 3 minutes. Do not evacuate or move to higher ground when you hear the test signal and do not call 911.
