A Political Rally on the Quad

Alumni

Where do our majors go and what do they do once they have graduated with a B.A. in Political Science from Humboldt State University?

Some stay near and pursue a local political career:

Harmony Groves (’04) was elected to the Arcata City Council in November 2004.
"New Arcata Council"

John Woolley ('67) is serving on the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors.

Peter La Vallee (’74) has been Mayor of Eureka since 2002.

Some alums take off for other parts of the state:

Gretchen Kinney-Newsom (’04) is currently an executive fellow working in State Treasurer Phil Angelides’ office in Sacramento—and loving it!

Melissa Scolari (’02) was the Panetta intern from HSU in 2001. She is currently Senior Legislative Aide for Assemblywoman Carol Liu (D-Pasadena), working on issues pertaining to women and children, the environment, water quality and privacy.

Steven Steward (’03) is working for Congressman Brad Sherman in Washington DC as a Legislative Aide covering Veterans and Small Business issues.

Ryan Zinn (’97) is currently working with the non-profit organization, the Organic Consumers Association in San Francisco.

Stephanie Di Alto (’98) has just completed her Ph.D. in political science at UC Irvine.

Then there is Washington, D.C.:

Erin Ziegler (’03) was the Panetta Intern from HSU in 2003. She is currently working for Congressman Mike Thompson in his D.C. office, and has just been accepted at the Boalt School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley.

Gary Costello (’74), after completing an M.A. in Public Administration at Harvard, went on to consult for the World Bank, headquartered in Washington, D.C.

Our alums are found all over the world:

Darcie Harvey (’97) started out with a local internship in Arcata, then an internship with Amnesty International in London, and after graduation, landed a coveted paid internship with the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.

Jessica Shadian (’96) is currently living in Cambridge, England finishing up her dissertation on the Arctic Council for indigenous peoples for the University of Delaware.
