REU Program Application

Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Humboldt State University

To be eligible, students must not have completed their B.A. or B.S. degree, and must be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. (or it's possessions). The National Science Foundation's goal is for REU programs to be national in scope, so Humboldt State University undergraduates have a lower probability of being accepted than students from other institutions (but we encourage all applications nonetheless, and will take students from HSU)

Application form: Deadline is 5pm Tuesday, April 1st, 2008, but all applications will be reviewed as they are received and outstanding students may receive offers prior to the 1st . Late submissions will be considered if space is still available. Minority students and students at institutions without opportunities for research experience will be given priority.

This application form when completed will be submitted and then sent to hsureu2@humboldt.edu.

Please list any special living or working concerns you'd like us to know about (allergies, disabilities, etc.):
NOTE: The following questions have no effect in selection of students; it's just information we need for paperwork we fill out.
* Have you ever been a student at Humboldt State University? If 'YES,' please give dates of attendance:
* Would you be considered a resident of California? If 'YES,' please give county of residence
B. Research interests

Please choose among the following categories to express your interest in research areas, taxonomic groups, and/or faculty mentors. Please recognize that we need to juggle student interests with faculty availability and thus we often may not be able to give you your top choice. In particular, at this point in time we are not sure exactly which faculty will have room in their laboratories to sponsor a student. If you do not have strong preferences for a conceptual area, taxonomic area, or faculty member, leave the section blank. We encourage students to use the REU experience to broaden their horizons and explore new research areas.

Conceptual areas of interest:
Please list your top three areas of interest, in order starting with your first choice, from the following list (we tried to list both "general" and "specific" categories for you to choose from; feel free to include other areas that aren't listed here): animal behavior, biogeography, community ecology, ecology, ecological and evolutionary modeling, ecosystem ecology, nutrient dynamics, evolution, molecular evolution, physiological ecology, neurobiology, population ecology, population genetics, systematics

Taxonomic areas of interest:
Please list your top three areas of interest, in order starting with your first choice, from the following list (we tried to list both "general" and "specific" categories for you to choose from; feel free to include other areas that aren't listed here): animals, birds, amphibians, fish, mammals, ferns, fungi, herbaceous plants, insects, bees, marine invertebrates, leeches, flowering plants, rare plants, pollinators, bats, bacteria, trees, aquatic insects.

Faculty members in the Department that interest you:
Please list your top three, in order starting with your first choice. A complete list of NSF REU faculty mentors is available at: http://www.humboldt.edu/~hsureu/ Note that the departmental website (http://www.humboldt.edu/~biosci/) has photos of faculty and additional information on faculty research areas and interests, but not all faculty at HSU are members of our REU program. As noted above, room in any particular faculty member's laboratory is often limited, which may limit our options in matching students with mentors.

C. Under-represented groups
One of the goals of our program is to increase participation of groups that are considered underrepresented in science. We would appreciate knowing if you consider yourself a member of one of the following groups: Women, Native Americans (American Indians and Alaskan Natives), Blacks (African Americans), Native Pacific Islanders (Polynesians or Micronesians), and Hispanics. Reporting this information is optional.
D. Confidential Recommendation Form
Students should ask two scientific mentors, academic advisors, or science instructors to write a letter of reference for them (we find that nonacademic or "community" referees (e.g. coaches, religious leaders) are much less useful). The referee should either submit the recommendation themselves to the email address above, OR you may submit an envelope that was sealed and signed across the seal by the referee.

It is important for you to assure that your application includes 2 letters of recommendation: those containing less than 2 will not be considered. We recommend that you politely check with your letter writers to assure they have sent these important documents
