Services :: Majordomo List Server

Overview

Majordomo List Server is available for use by Humboldt State University faculty and staff members.

A List Server (Majordomo), also called a "bulk mailer", is a server that manages "lists" made up of email addresses and sends mail to the lists. A mail message can be sent to the "list name", and it will go out to all addresses contained in the list.

List Types:

Open - An open list allows anyone, from anywhere to subscribe.

Closed - A closed list requires authorization of the list owner for each subscription.

Moderated - All messages in a moderated list require approval of the list owner or moderator prior to being distributed to list members. Both open and closed lists can be moderated.

Course List - Class members are subscribed automatically, and the list will be deleted at the end of the requested semester. The course list name will automatically be set up as hsu - subject and course number - section number.

Course List Example - The course list is generated from the class schedule using the requested semester, year, and crn. (Example: semester=Fall, year=00, crn=40038, subject=MATH, course=044, section=2, list name=hsu-math044-2).

List Server: Create, Subscribe, FAQ

To create a list on Majordomo, you may fill out and submit the request form below with the following information:

Type of List - open, closed, open moderated, closed moderated, course list
Password - for approving subscribers, changing the configuration file, unsubscribing users, etc.
Moderator/Owner E-Mail Address - complete, correct, email address of the moderator or list owner
List Name - name of list (example: hsu-dancer - the name must not contain spaces)
List Owner - faculty or staff members name
Office Bldg/Room - owner's office location
Office Phone - owner's office telephone number

If the list to be created is a course list, enter the additional information requested. You may leave List Name blank, as it will be generated automatically. (see Course List in Overview section above)

Request Form - To create a new list, fill out and submit this form.

Administration Form - List owner's administration form.

To subscribe to a list:

List Server Options - To become a member of a list, subscribe, unsubscribe, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions - Run a list, change a list, remove a list, etcetera.
