Faculty & Students

"Through the process of writing my thesis, I was able to make connections with some fairly high profile people in both the local community and globally working on the issues I care about most. The program encourages its participants to get involved with local organizations and network, and by doing this, I was able to find and land a job locally that I love. "

Maggie Donovan-Kaloust, Program Graduate, 2007

Faculty who participate in the Environment and Community Program are committed to the ideas of environmental stewardship, equity, and social justice.  This commitment transcends disciplines and indeed colleges as faculty from all three colleges at HSU participate in the program.  Program faculty value the opportunity to work with graduate students, both through small seminars and as thesis and project advisors.

Graduate students in the environment and community program are distinguished by their commitment to critical analysis and passion for social change. With backgrounds in diverse academic fields -- from theater to political science to biology -- they desire to draw together insights offered by this diversity and to develop a common foundation in social science theory. Many enter with a wealth of experience in fields related to the program, while others enter directly following their undergraduate degree. Roughly one-third of our students are from the Humboldt area, one-third from other parts of California, and one-third are from other regions of the U.S. and abroad.
