Introduction to Native American Studies
The Indian in American History
Federal Indian Law

After taking the core courses, all students are required to select an additional 24 credits (usually, 8 courses). Students may pursue a "General" NAS degree, or choose an "Option" area to specialize in. If a student chooses an optional specialized area, he or she must take four courses in that area - plus an additional four courses of his or her choice. [Students choosing to major in another academic discipline and minor in Native American Studies, as well as those pursuing interdisciplinary majors that include Native American studies, should contact the Native American Studies Department for further information.]

Each NAS Major will have to pass an "Area Exam" prior to graduation. This requirement is intended to ensure that every Native American Studies major has a basic understanding of tribal sovereignty, history and culture.
NAS Majors who choose a specialized Option may select 12 credits from any area, including the other Optional areas, or from the following courses which will still be offered to NAS majors.  NAS Majors who choose a general approach may select their additional courses (24 credits) from the Optional areas, and/or from the following courses.

Courses offered through the Indian Teacher Education Personnel Program Courses may also be utilized by NAS majors to meet departmental requirements:

At this time, we are proposing that students who are earning an NAS Minor may select their 15 credits from among all of the courses offered by the Native American Studies Department.  ITEPP courses do not count toward the Minor requirement.
