Section Three: The Trails

3.1 - Introduction

In the trail descriptions which follow, a wide variety of trail types and route locations are proposed. The trails included within this plan were selected based on routes shown in existing County and State documents in addition to suggestions received during Countywide public trails presentations (Ref. Appendix F.4). Trail descriptions have been categorized according to the government entity with jurisdiction and responsibility for the development and maintenance of each particular route. Categories (as defined in Section 1.2) include National, State, Regional, Municipal, and Community trails. Although the County has jurisdiction over both Regional and Community trails as well as portions of State proposed trail corridors, the County's major development orientation should be toward the community trail network.

Trail routing has been oriented toward public lands and County roads although, In several cases, routes are proposed on private property. Recommended primarily for private timber lands, a trail permit system is proposed which would provide those willing property owners with a means for monitoring use on their land. Trails proposed for inclusion in the permit system are indicated in the following text. Such trails could be closed to public use at the descretion of the owner. A more detailed discussion of the trail permit system is included in Section 4.5.

All noteworthy trails within the County located on Federal, State, and Municipal lands have been briefly described. Although the County takes no responsibility for the management of these existing or proposed trails located on lands outside of County jurisdiction, trail descriptions have been included with the purpose of providing trail users with information as to where suitable trails and trail areas are located. Such descriptions are included in response to public comments that no single reference is available which provides interested trail users with information on Countywide trail availability. This plan recommends that a comprehensive trails brochure be prepared and made available to the public for easy reference.

A TRAILS PLAN MAP (Not yet digitized - ed) HAS BEEN INCLUDED AT THE END OF THIS DOCUMENT TRAIL NUMBERS IN THE TEXT OF THE PLAN CORRESPOND TO TRAIL NUMBERS ON THE MAP. HOWEVER, IN MOST CASES, FEDERAL, STATE, AND MUNICIPAL TRAILS HAVE NOT BEEN INDICATED. FOR FURTHER DETAILS ON NON-COUNTY TRAILS, CONTACT THE APPROPRIATE FEDERAL, STATE, OR LOCAL AGENCY.
