First, remind your students that courses change and the
Online Schedule of Classes is updated every morning.
Psych Courses fall under CNRS.
During the junior year, (preferably with 3 semesters left) a student must
apply for graduation. Within 4-6 weeks, the student will receive a degree check
(or an updated DARS report) from the Registrar’s Office. This will state which courses/requirements the student has left to complete for:
General Education requirements
can be found in the HSU Catalog or the printed schedule of classes.
The GWPE (Graduation Writing Proficiency Exam)
must be taken prior to graduation. It should be taken during the junior year and after having passed ENGL 100 (or its equivalent).
A minor is not required for graduation.
Courses in the minor can be taken Credit/No Credit. Courses for GE can be taken Credit/No Credit.
Only one optional (mandatory courses such as PSYC 280 don't count) Credit/No Credit course is permissible per semester.
A maximum of 24 units of Credit is allowed towards the 120 unit minimum for the BA degree.
"15-30 Program." Recommend that students take 15 units for a full load. (If a student wants to graduate in four years, 15 units/semester is the minimum
as 120 units divided by 8 semesters is 15).
1-Unit Courses.

Advising Center. Pay special attention to
the information about Communicating with your Advisee.
Reminders:
PSYC 241 (Stats) is a pre-requisite for PSYC 242 (Research Mtds). They both, as well as Intro Psych, are pre-requisites for lab
(PSYC ###L) courses.
Starting Fall 2008, PSYC 200 was replaced with PSYC 242 for 4 units instead of 3. PSYC 280 will no longer be a requirement. Students caught in the middle
(i.e., have taken PSYC 200 but not 280) will have to make up the 1 unit of coursework with electives, either upper division or lower division.
Lab Rotation:
Every Spring: 325L: Adv Behavioral Neuroscience
- Spring of Even-Numbered Years: 335L: Social (Spring 10)
- Fall of Even-Numbered Years: 324L: Cognitive (Fall 08)
- Spring of Odd-Numbered Years: 311L: Developmental (Spring 09)
- Fall of Odd-Numbered Years: 345L: Psychological Testing and Measurement (Fall 09)
S-Factor courses (482, 495, 497, 499):
A maximum of 3 units of s-factor courses count towards the 9 units of electives (under the old major).
Under the new major, a maximum of 3 units from:
- 480: Selected Topics in Psychology (3)
- 482: Field Study (1-4)
- 495: Research in Psychology (1-4)
- 496: Psychology Research Seminar (3)
- 497: Mentoring (1-3)
- 499: Independent Study (1-3)
applies towards the major.
Substitutions to the Breadth Requirement must be approved by by advisor, Undergraduate Committee, and Department Chair.
Policy on Advising (New) (11-16-00)
Transfer of Psychology units of credit from Junior Colleges to the Departmental major
- Lower division Psychology courses from Junior Colleges, such as Introduction to Psychology and Research Design, may be assumed to
meet our lower division requirements for the major.
- If a course in statistics is taken at the Junior College and is similar to the one our Department offers, the student need not take another
Psychology statistics course for the major. If the statistics course is also from a psychology department, it may count towards the 45 units
in psychology required in the major. If the statistics course is not from a psychology department, another 4 units of psychology course work
must be substituted. ***(This has already been adopted as policy.)
- Because all courses taken in Junior College are lower division, the transfer of units for classes that would normally meet our upper
division requirements is a more complex issue. If the course syllabus and/or catalog description from the Junior College appear to meet
criteria similar to those in one of our existing required courses, the Junior College course shall be accepted as fulfilling the requirement
for our major. However, the student must take an additional elective in psychology in order to meet the current 34 units for the upper division
major requirement. (Note: The Counseling & School Psych graduate programs have prerequisite courses that must be taken as uppder division.)
- Because advising becomes a contractual agreement between the student and the advisor, in all complicated issues advisors are encouraged
to consult with those faculty members who are specialists in the course under discussion. When a disagreement occurs between the advisor
and the instructors, consultation with the Chair is recommended.
- Advisors should remind their advisees of the importance of taking 104, 200, 241 and 280 before advancing to their Junior year.
These courses are often prerequisites to some of the upper division courses. (UGC 04-09-03)
