Religious Studies Club:  Special Event

Guantanamo:  How Should We Respond? :: October 5, 2006 :: 10am-7pm

Humboldt State University will be the local outlet for a nation-wide teach-in on Guantanamo detentions:  "Guantanamo:  How Should We Respond?" on October 5, 2006 from 10am-5pm in the Kate Buchanan Room and from 5pm-7pm in Science B 135.

This program, originating from the Seton-Hall University Law School in New Jersey, will be made available on the big screen display in HSU's Kate Buchanan Room through an internet connection. This is a nation-wide broadcast to hundreds of campuses nationwide, providing a forum for discussion of matters related to the Guantanamo detentions by leading scholars, journalists, medical professionals, lawyers, and religious figures.

Notable among the participants is Alfred McCoy, Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin, whose ground-breaking work on the history of torture by the CIA has received national attention. Also featured is James Yee, Muslim chaplain at Guantanamo, who was detained for over two months without charge after his service at Guantanamo among Muslim detainees. Others of equal stature will also be featured.

HSU will be the only site for this event on the North Coast. All students, faculty, and staff from HSU are encouraged to attend, as well as any community members on the North Coast. This is a free event, and people are encouraged to come-and-go as their schedules allow.
