COACHING AND MENTORING IN SCIENCE TEACHING (CMIST)

Currently, our CMIST efforts take place in two school districts:
Klamath-Trinity Joint Unified School District , led by Ms Shannon Morago, and Round Valley Unified School District, led by Dr John DeMartini.  Please contact Shannon or John for additional information.

LESSON STUDY

The essence of Lesson Study is a deep intellectual involvement of teachers in the learning of their students and the act of teaching. Lesson Study is a professional development process in which teachers systematically examine their practice, with the goal of becoming more effective. During this process, teachers work collaboratively on a small number of lessons or unit. To provide focus and direction, teachers select an overarching goal and related research question that they want to explore. One of the lessons is chosen as the focal “research lesson.” While working on a research lesson, teachers jointly draw up a detailed plan for the lesson, which one of the teachers uses to teach the lesson in a real classroom (as other group members observe the lesson). The group then comes together to discuss their observations of the lesson. Often, the group revises the lesson, and another teacher implements it in a second classroom, while group members again look on. The group will come together again to discuss the observed instruction. Finally, the teachers produce a report of what their study lessons have taught them, particularly with respect to their research question.

The RSP Lesson Study initiative is directed by Jeffrey White. Currently, several Lesson Study teams are practicing. Please contact Jeff regarding future Lesson Study project work. The RSP may be able to provide some resources for this endeavor.

WORKSHOPS & CONFERENCES

ETHNOBOTANY WORKSHOP:

EXPLORING PLANT SCIENCES WITH GROCERY STORE BOTANY
In collaboration with the Natural History Museum, this 3-hour workshop explored ethnobotany and developed useful connections for integrating plant sciences across the curriculum. The workshop was held May 1, 2008 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Registration was open to Elementary & Middle School Teachers and Student Teachers (High School Teachers if space was available).  Stipends were available. For registration contact, Andreana Ososki at 707-826-4104 or ao32@humboldt.edu

Evolution and Adaptation: Teaching For Understanding
October 19-21, 2006

This nine hour mini-university course was offered in San Francisco during the California Science Teachers Association Conference, October 19-22.  The course focused on evolution and adaptation and instructional strategies to foster understanding among K–6 students. Development of thinking skills was a primary goal. Specific topics included the interplay between inheritance and evolution, speciation and extinction, evolutionary trees, and evidence for evolution. 1/2-unit of credit is available for the mini-university course. An optional distance learning follow-up is available to complete a 1-unit course.  Contact RSP for details.

CURRICULUM CONNECTIONS CONFERENCE: A FOCUS ON SCIENCE
This one day mini-conference was held on January 21, 2006 and highlighted innovative ideas and practices in K-12 science teaching by regional teachers and HSU faculty. This event was hosted by the Redwood Science Project and Humboldt County Office of Education.
