WSCA Palm Springs
February 17-21, 2006

xxxxxHSU Communication students will have the opportunity to experience an academic convention this year. The Western States Communication Association (WSCA) annual convention will be in Palm Spring February 17-22, 2006. The convention is a great place to get an idea of what people in the discipline are thinking and doing research about, learn more about human communication, and to make contacts with potential graduate schools. Students interested in going can earn one unit of COMM 495 credit by enrolling in the Convention Experience course.

xxxxxThe course will require you to attend an orientation meeting prior to the convention, attend programs at the convention, write a paper about your experiences at the convention, and attend a follow-up meeting to talk about the experience.

xxxxxStudents attending the convention will be responsible for expenses, including WSCA membership, convention fee, transportation, lodging (which does not have to be at the convention hotel), and meals. Sometimes funding is available from Associated Students to help fund such trips, through the Student Communication Association.

xxxxxStudents can also submit papers for the Undergraduate Scholars Research Conference, which is part of the convention. The conference is described as "an extraordinary opportunity for undergraduate students. Papers reporting original research and utilizing diverse philosophical, theoretical and methodological approaches are welcome." Having a paper accepted for this conference would be an outstanding item on anyone's resume.
