French Language and Culture
B.A. in French
The Program
Students learn to speak, understand, read, and write with reasonable fluency in French, becoming aware of the relationship between linguistic structures and our conceptual framework.
Most classes are taught in French, allowing rapid progress. Faculty assist those who wish to apply the language to other fields: international studies, Peace Corps service, business, social studies, medical technology.
Visits by literary critics, artists, consular officials, and guests from various regions of the French-speaking world complement classroom studies. Taped interviews, videocassettes, films, and computer software are also available to students.
French faculty and students participate in weekend workshops and retreats. Recent topics have been film, current affairs, and customs in lands where the language is spoken. The retreats take place in a youth hostel away from the university in a coastal setting.
Career possibilities include: export/import specialist, interpreter, teacher, ESL teacher, foreign service officer, airline employee, travel agent, foreign correspondent, international banker, literary translator, international financier.
