Program Description
The Montpellier Program is a 5-week full immersion Summer program offered exclusively by the Department of World Languages and Cultures to Humboldt State University students from all fields of study. Students from other universities and colleges, as well as community members, are also encouraged to apply.

This program follows the Humboldt State University Summer Schedule and generally begins the last week in May and ends the last week in June. Interested students who meet minimum qualifications should apply in the spring semester by completing the on-line application.


Location
Montpellier is a sunny city in southern France [map] of approximately 250,000 inhabitants located on the Mediterranean coast between Marseille and the Spanish border.


Facilities
The Institut Méditerranéan d'Études Francophones (IMEF) has been preparing foreign students for 20 years and is affiliated with the Université de Montpellier, which dates back to the 15th century.

Fren 321Intensive French Language Taught in France
60 hours of oral French language instruction at IMEF. Graded according to attendance, participation, seriousness of study, and improvement. Grades determined by HSU professor in consultation with IMEF instructors.

Fren 322Culture & Civilization Taught in France
6 linguistic workshops and 4-6 cultural workshops per week plus cultural activities with activity directors seven days a week. Written work submitted to HSU professor for course grade: two two-page double-spaced typed papers IN FRENCH on two cultural sites, themes or issues from these experiences. Due two weeks after return from France, Aug 17, 2007 in UANX 129 or 119.

Fren 323 Cultural Journal in France
Sum of daily entries in French based on cultural workshops, excursions, visits, films, performances, and French people who gave a perspective of French culture. Graded by HSU professor-director according to richness of cultural information and quality of French language expression. May include mementos of the month-long program. Journal due Aug. 17, 2007 to UANX 129 or 119.

Program Highlights
  • 20 hours per week of intensive language instruction
  • 6 linguistic workshops per week (45 minutes each)
  • 4-6 culture/civilization workshops per week
  • Cultural activities 7 days per week, including performances, museums, cinema, cuisine, guided excursions to principal cultural and historical sites, creative and sports activities.
  • Private room with breakfast 7 days per week
  • Local transportation passes for the length of the program
  • Daily communication with HSU campus Program Director by e-mail

Approximate Costs

Program fees range from $2,200.00 to $2,850.

They may rise slightly depending on the exchange rate of the dollar.

Fees include:

  • French language courses five days/week
  • Cultural, linguistic workshops
  • Complete program of cultural activities 7 days per week
  • Excursions: culture, sports, beaches, cities and historic sites in southernFrance: Arles, Aigues-Mortes, Nîmes, Avignon, le Pont duGard, Sète, and more.*
  • Local tram and bus passes for four weeks
  • Lodging in university dorms (la cite universitaire) ($2,200)
    Breakfasts 7 days per week

OR:            Family stay with breakfasts and dinners included ($2,850)   

In addition, students will need to have sufficient funds for the following:           

• Airfare to Paris CDG (????) + TGV train Paris-Montpellier (~$180 round trip)

• Health insurance: Somerton international student health insurance (less than $40.00)

• Personal expenses: meals not included in lodging option, telephone, Internet, other overnights, such as a night stopover in Paris on the return journey**

            • Passport and TWO extra passport photos

* Optional excursions include $25 for a canoe trip, $25 for a horseback ride in the Camargue, and $10 for ice skating.

**After the program is over, some students decide to spend a night in Paris on the way home. Some idea of costs: one afternoon+evening metro tickets $14, dinner $26, hotel $80, airport shuttle $15 = $135.


Qualifications

• B- (2.90?) average in university coursework. Good academic standing.

• One letter of recommendation from most recent French instructor for students outside HSU

• Interview in English with French Program faculty to determine aptitude for study abroad in terms of language skills, maturity and ability to represent the United States and HSU in France

• Two years of university-level French recommended, but may be substituted by other language study, high school years of study, life or overseas experience, exceptional aptitude, etc.

• High school students may be selected for the program in collaboration with their high school instructors. Minimum age is 17 years and requires parental permission.

Note: Students will NOT be accompanied by the HSU Program Director, who will be in regular communiction with the institute from the HSU campus. The IMEF institute director in Montpellier is Gérard Ribot.
