-----------------------------------------------------------

English 436 is a course in the methods used to teach English to non-native speakers through academic content. This includes theoretical rationals, modification of input, curriculum adaptation, learner centered strategies, and integration of language and literacy development.

English 436 includes topics such as Specifically Designed Academic Intsruction in English (SDAIE), content based English as a Second Language (ESL)/English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction, and other approaches to integrating language and content in English instruction.

This course is required for the Crosscultural Langauge and Academic Development(CLAD) certificate which is identical to the minor in Teaching English as a Second Language. This course is offered at Humboldt State University so that students in the teacher preparation programs, multiple or single subjects, may obtain a CLAD certificate when they obtain their teaching credential. It is open to local teachers who wish to update their education. This course helps develop and refine skills necessary in teaching English as a Second Language.

The larger goal, one HSU shares with the Commission on Teacher Credentialing, is to ensure that California teachers are trained to teach children with linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds.
