ABOUT THE WORKSHOPAPPLYSCHEDULECOMPOSITION CONTEST |
Compositions should be an original, previously unpublished, work for brass octet (3131) – 3 trumpets (cornets, flugelhorns), horn (in F), 3 trombones (bass clef), & tuba. Euphonium (bass clef) may be substituted for one trombone part (312.11). The composition should be a multi movement work, from 13-15 minutes in length. Composer’s original material written for another complement and adapted for brass octet is acceptable. Difficulty level: should be playable by the average college ensemble. You may write for trumpets in other keys (C, E-flat, picc), but please include Bb parts; trombone parts in bass clef.
All works will be PLAYED and judged by the BCMW coaching staff.
Winners’ works to be performed during the July 2009 Brass Chamber Music Workshop, held in Arcata, California. Amateur musicians in a workshop format will perform music.
Please include a complete score, a completed set of parts and a recording. Recording may be a synthesized midi recording. All entries should be received no later than February 1, 2009. Winning submissions will be notified by May 15, 2009.
In order to ensure anonymity, do NOT put your name on the score or on any of the parts. Put all contact information (name, address, phone, email) in a SEALED envelope with the TITLE of your composition on the outside of the envelope.
Please print all scores and parts double-sided, taking page turns into consideration. Also, please bind and/or tape scores and parts. Please do not submit loose pages.

One copy of all submissions becomes the property of the BCMW, for use at the workshop and may be performed at a later date. Composer retains copyrights of all works submitted.
The contest focused on original works for brass septet written for college-level ensemble. Compositions were requested to be multi movement works, from 13-15 minutes in length. All qualifying contest entries were played and evaluated by the workshop coaching staff. The coaching staff consists of professional brass musicians from the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. The winners’ works will be performed during the 2009 Brass Chamber Music Workshop. “We have added some wonderful music to our library and I am anxious for all workshop participants to have an opportunity to play it,” said Clements. “I am especially excited by the level of international participation in the contest. Congratulations to the winners, and many thanks to all the fine composers who submitted works.”
