Professor Giovannetti, a mixed-blood Huss Indian, is an Assistant
Professor of Native American Studies major at Humboldt State University's
Ethnic Studies, where he has taught full-time since 1992. He was born and
raised in Eureka, California and is an enrolled Howenquet Indian (Tolowa)
from the Smith River Rancheria in northwestern California. Giovannetti
is a direct lineal descendent of Huss hereditary head man, U-hosh-eth,
whose English name was Joe Hostler, of the village of Howenquet. He is
also a lineal descendent of Huss dancemaker Dronth-dos, whose English name
was Long Hair Bob. Giovannetti has been intregrally involved in Tolowa
culture, history, and recognition/status clarification issues since 1979.
He served as Tribal Chairman of the Tolowa Nation Tribal Council from 1983
to 1985 and was a member of the Genealaogy Committee and Tribal History
committees during the preparation of the Tolowa Nation petititon to what
is now known as the Interior Department's Bureau of Acknowledgment &
Research (BAR). Giovannetti testified on behalf of the Tolowa Nation's
recognition petition at congressional hearings in 1988 and 1991. He is
married and has two children, Grant 14 and Stephanie, 11
