DEGREE REQUIREMENTS CHANGES AND NEW POLICIES

Humboldt State University’s Academic Senate has recommended, and President Richmond has approved the following changes to HSU’s undergraduate degree requirements and academic policies.

Completion of GE Basic Subjects and Quantitative Reasoning (math) within First 60 Units

Effective academic year, regardless of your catalog year, students will be required to complete all of Area A and Area B3 (Quantitative Reasoning) by the time they earn 60 units (junior standing) OR, for students who transfer to HSU with more than 30 units, before they complete 30 units at HSU. Advisors will NOT release registration access codes to students missing one or more subjects until you present him/her with a plan to complete the missing course(s) in the next semester.

Revised Repeat Policy

Effective Spring 2006, students may only repeat courses for a third or subsequent attempt with instructor, department, and college dean approval. This policy does NOT apply to courses that are repeatable. Grades of “W” do not count as an attempt.

General Education Area D and American Institutions-one “double-count” allowed

Students are now allowed to use one American Institutions course (U.S. History, or U.S. Constitution and State and Local Government) to count in lower division GE Area D. (This allowance does not apply to transfer students who have already been allowed to double-count one or more of their transfer Institutions courses in GE.)  A few things to note about this change are:

  • It became effective summer 2005, and from that time forward applies to ALL students seeking a bachelor’s degree, regardless of catalog year.

  • The American Institutions course will be considered as a distinct discipline within lower division Area D, so a student can fulfill the requirement of nine units in three different disciplines by completing, for example: History 104, History 110-American Institutions,  and PSCI 104; or Econ 104, Econ 323 (Institutions), and Soc 104.

  • If a student satisfies the American Institutions requirement with an upper division course or courses (such as PSCI 359 or 410 or Econ 323) the upper division course will apply to lower division GE Area D, not upper division GE area D.

  • This GE allowance applies to American Institutions units earned through coursework or units earned through approved Advanced Placement examinations, but not for subject competency established by examination.
