Overview

In order to discharge the treated wastewater from the chlorine contact basin into Humboldt Bay the City of Arcata had to demonstrate that the process constituted an enhancement of the bay. To fulfill this obligation the city incorporated three enhancement marshes (Figure 1) into their design for the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary. The enhancement marshes fulfill these regulatory requirements by providing additional water treatment, wildlife habitat, and recreation opportunities. The development of these marshes was a long process in which many of these requirements were considered.
