Schedule (tentative)

Dates: May 17 – June 14, 2012

NOTE: The schedule below serves as a guideline only and may be changed at anytime in the field due to weather conditions, unforeseen issues, and/or at the Project Director’s discretion.

Field Work Schedule:....................Sunday – Friday

Laboratory Schedule:....................Rotation Schedule (TBA)
           
Visits to archaeological sites:..........Half a Day on Saturdays

Calling home:............................Saturdays (morning or afternoon,
                                                         depends on the rotation schedule)

Lecture Schedule:.......................TBA (usually Monday through Thursday
                                                         by the Project Director and other field researchers).
                                                         Lectures are mandatory for all HSU students.

May 17

  • We will meet at the Belize City International Airport (BZE) for pick up and transport to the archaeology camp facilities. I will be at the airport all day.
  • Upon Camp Arrival  (around 6:00PM):
    • Room assignments
    • Unpack
    • Dinner
    • Brief tour of the camp
    • Brief overview of rules and regulations of the field school. 

May 18

  • Repetition of rules and regulations of the field school
  • Finish Unpacking 
  • PfBAP Background Information
  • Introduction to the camp/field staff
  • Hands-on exercises:
  • Survey Procedures
    • Tape and Compass Mapping Exercise
    • GPS
    • Total Data Station
  • Excavation Set-up
    • How to set up a Test Unit
  • Lot Forms Overview
  • Laboratory Procedures
    • Forms
    • Artifacts
    • Sorting, bagging, and cataloguing

May 19:

  • Camp Chores Assignments
  • Linda Vista Store Trip:
    • Call home and buy personal items

May 20:

  • Field Work:
    • Dos Hombres Site Tour
    • Field rules and regulations
    • Overview of the research goals for the Dos Hombres to Gran Cacao Survey Transect Project
    • Survey procedures in the field

May 21 - May 26:

  • Field Work
  • Evening Lectures
  • May 27: First Paper Due
  • Field Journal collected after dinner on Friday, May 27

May 27:

  • No Field work
  • Medicinal Trail Archaeology Site Tour
  • Trip to Linda Vista, a convenience store, where students can buy calling cards and call home.

May 28 - June 2:

  • Field Work
  • Lab Rotations begin this week
  • Evening Lectures
  • June 3: Second Paper Due
  • Field Journal collected after dinner on Friday, June 3

June 3:

  • No Field work
  • La Milpa Site Tour
  • Trip to Linda Vista to call home

June 4 - June 9:

  • Field Work
  • Mandatory Laboratory Hours
  • Evening Lectures
  • June 10th: Third Paper Due
  • Field Journal collected after dinner on Friday, June 10

June 10:

  • No field work
  • Lamanai: rented bus for the archaeological site tour
  • Trip to Linda Vista to call home

June 11 – June 13:

  • Field Work
  • Mandatory Laboratory Hours
  • Evening Lectures

June 14:

  • No field work
  • Assist with cleaning and packing equipment
  • Trip to Linda Vista to call home
  • Begin packing
  • Hand-in field journals to class instructor

June 15:

  • Departure from Belize City (unless previous arrangements have been discussed and approved by Dr. Marisol Cortes-Rincon)

June 23:
