The Humboldt State University School of Business is introducing a formal internship program providing academic internships through supervised hands-on experiences beginning Spring semester 2012. The program will provide experiential learning opportunities for undergraduate business students to link classroom business concepts with actual business practice in a variety of local for-profit and non-profit settings. Interns will receive mentoring from two professionals – the HSU professor and the organization’s intern supervisor.

Internship opportunities may come in a variety of forms. Some possible examples include –

  • Project management
  • Business growth development
  • Organizational assessment
  • Process evaluation
  • Inventory evaluation and planning
  • Marketing projects
  • Accounting projects

The Value of Internships:

Students – The value to students is a “hands-on” experiential academic experience aimed at career-related learning with application of concepts and models acquired from current and previous coursework. Personal development and professional preparation are outcomes that will help students in their transition to business professionals.

Sponsoring organizations – The added value to organizations is the delivery of a defined outcome – i.e. a deliverable resulting from a project with clearly articulated, compelling objectives for the specific term. The sponsoring organization will define a business problem or challenge that may require research, active organization collaboration and recommendations.

HSU School of Business – The internship program serves the School’s priority of providing experiential learning opportunities for students and enhanced links to the community.
