River Rescue Certification

May 19 - 20

A dynamic water rescue course specifically written and designed for private boaters and kayakers. Emphasis is on identifying hazards, thinking through rescues and on RESCUE itself; both of self and others. This course meets agency Swiftwater Rescue certification requirements for river guides and kayakers and its pace allows for thorough integration of knowledge and practice of the skills that matter. This course should be a prerequisite to anyone boating on any river anywhere!  The course addresses the river rescue needs of rafters, cat boaters, kayakers, pack rafters, canoeists, riverboarders and SUP paddlers. Eel River Rafting: 3 Nights 4 Days

Get ready for one of the most amazing wild and scenic stretches of river around. This trip will give you the experience of a life time rafting 47 miles of the Eel River with little to no civilization around. Wilderness First Responder with Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS

May 21 - 30

This challenging course is designed to provide outdoor leaders, instructors, guides, rangers and travelers with the knowledge needed to deal with emergencies in remote settings. It is an 80- hour curriculum that meets national standards for urban and extended care situations. Special topics include but are not limited to: wilderness wound management and infection, realigning fractures and dislocations, improvised splinting techniques, patient monitoring and long-term management problems, up-to-date information on all environmental emergencies, plus advice on drug therapies. Emphasis is placed on prevention and decision making. Certifications upon successful completion include: WMI Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and American Heart Association CPR. WFR is recognized by many governmental agencies, outdoor schools, and other institutions as advanced training for people whose jobs require them to operate in wilderness settings. All levels of previous training are welcome. The course fee includes instruction; all course materials including books and handouts, and all certification costs. Please note that the registration deadline is well in advance of the course. Isshinryu Karate

June 2 - July 30

If you are looking for an activity that provides a workout with the benefit of learning a prac- tical form of self-defense, this may be for you. Beginners are welcome! Isshinryu Karate is a classical style of Okinawan Karate. Participants learn basic, forms (kata), sparring techniques and a direct, effective form of self-defense. Robert Sherman, eighth degree black belt and chief instructor, has taught Isshinryu Karate concurrently at HSU since 1979.

Jazz Improvisation

June 5 - July 10

This class is geared toward the beginning or intermediate jazz improviser. Students will work together to gain the necessary skills to be effective soloists, learn fundamental chords and scales and the basics of swing rhythm, and be introduced to the twelve bar blues and other essential jazz song forms. Students will also learn how to compose a simple twelve bar blues song, and have the opportunity to perform it for the class.

Introduction to Stand Up Paddling

As the ancient Hawaiian form of surfing, Stand Up Paddle Surfing has reemerged as a popular and fun fitness form. The introduction course provides the essential information and skills needed to enjoy paddling on flat water. Enjoy the sights of our local waterfront, while getting a fun workout at the same time. Topics covered will include equipment, basic paddling technique and board maneuvering as well as health benefits.

Kayak Fundamentals

June 8

This course will provide a fun and safe environment to learn the baseline skills no kayaker should be without. Topics will include boat anatomy, kayak fit, and essential equipment. Our experienced guides will support your introduction to a variety of paddle strokes, boat handling, bracing, safety considerations with an emphasis on injury prevention, and then spend the majority of the time working on self and assisted rescues after a capsize. Time permitting, kayakers will have an opportunity learn and practice the skills necessary for a combat roll.

Introduction to Surfing

This course offers students the opportunity to safely learn and enjoy the sport of surfing! Designed for the individual having little or no surfing experience, we will focus on water safety, surf etiquette, ocean awareness, surfboard handling and technique. We will surf where the conditions are best for beginning surfers.
