EMT Skills Verification

Spin

October 20 - November 20
Spinning is a non-impact, highly effective way to build cardiovascular strength and endurance. This class includes 40 minutes of high intensity cardio set to music with a 10 minute cool down and stretch period. This class is appropriate for all levels. Class size is limited-register early! A wheelchair accessible station is available with 1 day advance notice.

Isshinryu Karate

October 20 - December 3

If you are looking for an activity that provides a workout with the benefit of learning a practical form of self-defense, this may be for you. Beginners are welcome! Isshinryu Karate is a classical style of Okinawan Karate. Participants learn basic, forms (kata), sparring techniques and a direct, effective form of self-defense. Robert Sherman, eighth degree black belt and chief instructor, has taught Isshinryu Karate concurrently at HSU since 1979.

Yoga

October 21 - November 20
Vinyasa flow yoga classes offer a creative and unique sequence of poses that are richly infused with classical yoga teachings, alignment, breathing, and meditation to calm the mind and open the heart. This class is designed to build warmth, mobilize joints, and get energy flowing through stretching the connective tissues and releasing the hips, hamstrings, shoulders and back, and using therapeutic breath throughout the practice. This is a fun class with sequences from various schools of yoga. Cultivate inner awareness while building strength and flexibility.

Acting for Non-Actors

October 21 - December 9
Unleash your imagination! Take time off from your rational mind. Melt away shyness, grow confidence, self esteem, be spontaneous, play theatre games and practice being seen and heard without the pressure to perform. Non-stop encouragement replaces critique, judgment and competition in this fun, physical, goofy (proven effective) class. The instructor takes his cues from you and guides you toward personal freedom of expression in whatever direction you choose to go.

Core Attack

October 21 - November 20
This 30 minute class targets your core (i.e., abdominals, obliques, gluteals, spinal erectors, hip extensors, etc.) through a variety of exercises all the while improving core stability, core strength, core endurance, hip mobility, coordination, and balance.

Power Hour

October 21 - November 20
A boot camp style course designed to burn a large amount of calories in a short period of time. Push your body through various resistance, body-weight, plyometric, and functional training movements that will challenge your physical and mental strength. This class will give you variety and enjoyment, whether you are in advance physical shape or just starting out at working at intense levels of physical exertion.

Guitar Skills for the Modern Guitarist

October 23 - November 13
Learn how to become a better performer by acquiring a modern approach to the guitar. This course will give a brief overview of playing techniques, practice regimes, musicianship, and a few tips and tricks about recording and songwriting. Whether beginner or advanced, this course will help you become a better musician.

Wilderness First Responder Recertification with Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS

October 24 - 26
This three day scenario based course may be used to recertify a WFR certification. You must possess a current (unexpired) WFR certification of least 70 hours to recertify through a WFR Recertification course. It is your responsibility to make sure your certification meets this standard. WMI certifications will be afforded a one-year period after expiration within which to recertify. This course will also recertify those who hold a valid WEMT (wilderness portion only) or WAFA certification. If recertifying, you must submit a photocopy of your current certification card(s) on the first day of the course.

Intermediate Sailing

October 25 & 26

This class is designed to get back on the water and take the skills learned in Introduction to Sailing a step further. The Coronado, a 15-foot sailboat, will be utilized to become more proficient in your sailing techniques and learn the lines of a larger sea craft. The course will also cover water safety, navigation, and the basics of how to sail on your own.

Prerequisite: 
Participants must have completed Introduction to Sailing within the last year. If you completed the Introduction course more than one year ago, Sailing Refresher Course is required. Or instructor approval.
Program Fee: 
$132 HSU Students • $149 All Others
Program Fee Includes: 
Instruction, sailboat & equipment, pfd and wetsuit
