BEGINNING SHORE FISHING

Have you ever looked at our beautiful bay and wondered what was out there? Maybe you saw someone fishing and wondered what he or she was fishing for and what he or she knew. this is an introductory class on Humboldt Bay, and all of its fishing opportunities. In this class, one can expect to learn about equipment, laws and regulations, biodiversity, fishing techniques, cleaning of fish and cooking techniques. By the end of this class you will have the knowledge in order to reap the rewards that are available for us in our beautiful bay!
Program Fee: $55 HSU Students

KNOTS SEMINAR

Outdoor enthusiasts use an assortment of ropes and knots for outdoor skills. Many of these same knots can be useful for a variety of everyday uses, ranging from camping, climbing, sailing, loading vehicles, and more. This seminar will cover various knots including hitches, bends, loops and other important knots. If you would like to have the mystery taken out of knot tying, this class is for you!

LEAVE NO TRACE TRAINING

When adventuring in the outdoors, there is nothing more important than protecting the areas we use and love. Leave No Trace is an internationally recognized program that utilizes a set of ethics that help us to understand how to reduce out impact in the back country as well as the front country. This training will give you a general knowledge of how to make good decisions to reduce your impact wherever you are.

MAP AND COMPASS NAVIGATION

Join us as we learn the essential skill set of map and compass based navigation. This course will benefit both the novice navigator as well as those looking to build confidence in their skills. The course includes a combination of classroom presentations and outdoor practical experience that will help you to better plan hikes and backcountry trips. Topics covered include how to interpret topographical maps, the features of a compass, how to orient a map to match the environment both with and without a compass, how to take bearings and triangulate your position using a compass, and how to use a map & compass to navigate to new locations.
Program Fee: $35 HSU Students, $50 All Others

WILDERNESS SURVIVAL

Wilderness Survival is designed to provide you with the basic skills of survival for when all else fails. Today, travel in the backcountry is more popular, more comfortable and more high-tech than years before. But what do you do when high-tech becomes no-tech? This course teaches you - the wilderness traveler - how to utilize materials at hand in making emergency shelters, building fires, and finding water and food, as well as other survival skills.n The instructor will provide all materials for class. Survival kits will be discussed during the second class meeting; samples of home-built and commercial survival kits will be available for the students to take apart and examine. Students are encouraged to build their own kits during this course. Class size is limited to 16 people, so register as soon as possible. All skill levels are welcome! No outdoor experience is needed for this course.

DUTCH OVEN COOKING

Explore the versatile world of Dutch Oven Cooking with natural fuels such as pine cones or tree bark for enhancing your enjoyment of the outdoors. Dutch Ovens are versatile, easy to cook in and simple to clean. With correct use, proper care, a well-seasoned oven produces a unique flavor unequaled by any other cooking utensil. Historical roots lie in Europe and Asia and a new found interest in Dutch Ovens has developed through recreation and survival enthusiasts. Spend the day cooking! On the menu: beef stew with dumplings, baked potato, baked garlic and an infamous peach cobbler.
