The Social Work Student Association Our mission is to enhance the lives of community members by listening and responding to their needs, volunteering our time and mobilizing resources. We shall work towards educating ourselves and others about the social work profession and the values that guide it.
About the Club
The SWSA works to fulfill its mission by connecting students, faculty, and alumni with local groups and agencies. We do this by inviting and hosting speakers from different agencies, by having movie nights and discussion, by doing fundraising and collection drives, and by a variety of other activities.

Astronomy & Physics
The Astronomy and Physics club holds the purpose to gather students and community members whom are interested in Physics and Astronomy. We hope to create an environment to stimulate curiosity about Physics and teach each other what we know. We have the ability to use the Professors on campus to help us clarify our interests is greater depth. Our club is also responsible for providing days for community observing nights. We have many opportunities to use the observatory and teach others about the observatory!

Anthropology Club
The HSU Anthropology Club is designed to promote a greater understanding of the academic discipline among undergraduates and enable them to explore their interests within the field. We are a fun and friendly group that holds meetings and plans events throughout the year that are related to the various aspects of anthropology (physical, cultural, linguistics, and archaeology).
About the Club
Unlike previous years, the renovated Anthropology Club encompasses all the sub-fields of the discipline including archaeology, cultural, linguistics, physical, and applied… and any topics that might fall into these categories. We generally meet every week and sponsor events throughout the month that allow students to experience the vast greatness that is anthropology in order to refine (or broaden!) their related academic or personal interests. Led by an adviser within the department, as well as an elected student body composed of a president, treasurer, and individuals representing each of the sub-disciplines, this club truly strives to exist solely for the students and thus all meetings and events are designed, promoted, and implemented by those who are interested! From flintknapping to primatology to foreign film nights to networking, Anthropology Club is the place for you—major or not!

American Fisheries Society HSU Student Subunit
We are a Student Subunit of the California-Nevada Chapter of the American Fisheries Society, based at Humboldt State University in Arcata, California. The mission of the American Fisheries Society is to improve the conservation and sustainability of fishery resources and aquatic ecosystems by advancing fisheries and aquatic science and promoting the development of fisheries professionals.
About the Club
We attend attend regional and national fisheries conferences, work within the local community to raise awareness of fisheries issues, participate in a variety of sport fishing and social activities, and strive to assist students within HSU’s Fisheries Biology Department.
Membership Qualifications
The club is open to all undergraduate and graduate Fisheries Biology majors, undeclared students interested in the major, and students interested in fisheries issues. We highly recommend that all club members join the American Fisheries Society. Student membership is $20 per year and includes online journal subscriptions, a monthly magazine, and access to the AFS InfoBase. You can join online at American Fisheries Society or print out an application here. We also conduct a membership drive during the Spring Semester, offering a discounted membership fee of $10. Please contact a club officer for more details.

The purpose of HOLA shall be to foster leadership development through the coordination of educational and cultural events/projects. This will be achieved by:
a. Providing the HSU community with cultural events that represent all Hispanic/Latino Communities, including but not limited to cultural beliefs, celebrations, music, and customs of Latin America) to increase awareness of the Hispanic/Latino population on campus.
b. Coordinating with the HSU Spanish program to provide the opportunity for interested parties to practice Spanish with Heritage Speakers and/or Spanish Learners.

HSU Student Climbers Coalition
The HSU Student Climbers’ Coalition (SCC) is a student-led rock climbing team and educational sports club at Humboldt State University in Arcata, California. Members of the team train together locally and compete in intercollegiate climbing competitions through the USA Collegiate Climbing Series (CCS). Our team was founded in 2009 with five original members and has grown to over thirty members since its inception.

Queer Student Union
A Fun and Safe Place for Queer Identified People and our Allies. We are a space for the queer community to be safe to talk about important things, play games, plan events, and talk about queer life on campus, as well as meet new friends and gain support. Our meetings and events are open to community members, but we are a student-focused organization.
About the Club
The first Thursday of every month is a check-in style group facilitated by a peer counselor, with people talking about recent occurrences, how they have been doing, or other events.
The third meeting of the month is a Potluck and Game Night! People bring food to share, and games to play, and good times are had.
Other meetings of the month are subject to change, and may range from planning events to safer sex education workshops to music! Who knows what fun things we have in store.

As a Club at Humboldt State University, we believe it is important to help, guide, and mentor TRiO students currently enrolled in High School, while at the same time building relationships with the community as well as in our TRiO group. "TRIO began as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson's War on Poverty. The Educational Opportunity Act of 1964 established an experimental program known as Upward Bound. Then, in 1965, the Higher Education Act created Talent Search. Finally, another program, Special Services for Disadvantaged Students (later known as Student Support Services), was launched in 1968. Together, this “trio” of federally-funded programs encouraged access to higher education for low-income students."

On October 2000, six women came together to discuss the possibility of establishing a Latina based sorority at Humboldt State University. These six women shared the same vision and quest as the Most Honorable Founding Mothers and Charters. At the time of their meeting, there was only one other Hispanic/ Latino group on campus. Noticing the lack of Latino representation at HSU, these women formed the Interest group of Gamma Alpha Omega Sorority, Inc. and began meeting on a regular basis. On January 26, 2001, the Interest Group of Gamma Alpha Omega Sorority, Inc. received word that they had been accepted as a local sorority on campus. The Petitioning Group of GAO traveled to Milwaukee, WI in April 2002 to make a presentation to the National B.O.D. and became the Charter Colony, the first in California. Upon their return, six hardworking and motivated ladies, who are known today as the Charter Class, had the same vision and joined them in their quest. On October 2002 all the members of the Charter Colony went to Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX and once again, they made a presentation to the National B.O.D. and were initiated as the Pi Chapter of Gamma Alpha Omega Sorority, Inc. on October 25, 2002. Graduation Pledge Alliance
The Graduation Pledge of Social and Environmental Responsibilty is a campus tradition that started at HSU in 1987 and has since spread to campuses around the world. The Pledge is a simple personal vow to consider the social and environmental consequences of the decisions that we make: “I pledge to explore and take into account the social and environmental consequences of any job I consider and will try to improve these aspects of any organizations for which I work.” The GPA is currently collecting volunteer and internship opportunities for undergraduates and invites you to visit the office to see what awaits you (office hours are by appointment, Tuesday and Thursday. Contact the coordinator at the email provided) The Graduation Pledge Alliance has since expanded to include students of all class standings. The pledge isn't just about the workplace either; its a lifestyle! The Society for Creative Anachronism
The SCA is dedicated to the art of studying the Medieval Age globally. Beta Sigma Epsilon
In January of 2000 the founders noticed there was a disproportionately high dropout rate among the Native American students. In there efforts to address the retention and enrollment rates among Native American students in higher education they created an organization. This organization is a collegiate fraternity, called Beta Sigma Epsilon (ΒΣΕ. ΒΣΕ is an organization that uses the existing “Greek Life” institution, found prevalently throughout American campuses, to address issues among Native American students in the campus setting. ΒΣΕ was created as one way to address Native American student issues in college. The vision for ΒΣΕ is to develop and support members through activities and through these activities, benefit and promote the advancement of Native people. For this, the mission of ΒΣΕ was created: The Fraternal Order of Beta Sigma Epsilon has been created to serve the Native American community through the multifaceted development of young men. Members will strive for excellence in brotherhood, academia, profession, community service, and cultural awareness, through the earnest study and practice of leadership, unity, prudence, determination, and truth. The Fraternal Order of Beta Sigma Epsilon will serve as a safe, supportive, transitional environment that will provide members with opportunities, resources, tools, and experiences necessary for success in collegiate life and beyond. Members will share their own unique experiences, perspectives, and ideas for the development and advancement of individual members, the fraternal order, academia, the professions, and the Native American community. Lance Britton (Wailaki), Brandon Price (Navajo), Jeff Hodge Jr. (Hupa), and Eric Zeldin founded us, the Delta Chapter at Humboldt State University, in the spring of 2007. Then in 2009 were officially recognized through the school and declared a part of the Greek system. Beta Sigma Epsilon is a young and still growing fraternity. It’s a great opportunity to be a part of something and say you had a hand in making this fraternity a strong and successful organization.

Humboldt Water Polo
The purpose of this club is to provide an opportunity for students to play water polo at a competitive level.

We plan to become affiliated with the CWPA (Collegiate Water Polo Association). Through this association we want to compete against other north-west college club teams. We will hold practices in the pool and on dry land to work on swimming ability, water polo skills, and conditioning.

Associated Student of Humboldt State University
The Associated Students Council of Humboldt State University is a recognized non-profit corporation. The specific purpose of this corporation is to provide a means for responsible and effective participation in the governance of the campus; provide an official voice through which students' opinions may be expressed; foster awareness of these opinions both on and off campus; assist in the protection of the rights and interests of the individual student and the student body; provide services and programs as deemed necessary by the corporation to meet the needs of the student and campus community; and to stimulate the educational, social, physical, and cultural well-being of the University community. Humboldt Women's Rugby
Humboldt Women's Rugby comes together as a team to compete, and win, in Division II of the Northern California Rugby Football Union. We travel throughout Northern California and Nevada for league matches (Spring) and throughout the entire west coast during the preseason (Fall). The 2011 team finised 2nd place in the Northern California RFU, behind Santa Clara University, and 5th place in the Pacific Coast RFU.
About the Club
Women’s Rugby at Humboldt State University started in 1997.
We practice and compete during both the Fall and Spring semesters: The Fall is our preseason where we travel to tournaments and friendly matches in preparation for our league matches. Our league season begins when we return from Winter Break in January. We play approximately 6 matches over an 8-week period.
When we qualify for the playoffs, our season can be extended as far out as the National Championships at the end of April.
Membership Qualifications
No experience required! You just need a desire to work hard and have fun! Most of the people who join our team have never even watched a rugby match, let alone played the sport. It is a great way to learn how to play the newest Olympic sport, have a good workout, and meet new people. Members of the team train 2 hours each day, 4 days each week: M/W are condtioning sessions; T/Th are coaching sessions. In the Fall players must also lift 2 hours each week on their own. With rare exception, matches are always on Saturdays (but not every Saturday).How to Join

One of the primary concerns of Lambda Theta Alpha has been and continues to be the growth and diversity of our sisterhood. Expressions is a club for people to connect and explore-express-expand through the Arts. Our purpose is to serve as a common meeting ground for those interested in expressing themselves through art, music, dance, hula hooping, poi, flow arts, written word, song, and more. The Entrepreneurs Club is an on campus resource for students, faculty, and community members who have passionate ideas and need help getting started. The E-Club is an interdisciplinary club, all majors are welcome because anyone can be an entrepreneur.
Throughout the year we enjoy hosting events such as, article discussions, speakers from all over the country, and getting involved in community projects. Last year through the Institute for Entrepreneurship Education we co-organized HSU’s first ever Symposium on Social Entrepreneurship. It was an all day event with speakers and workshops available to the students and community members!
This year we hope to expand our club and become more involved on campus and in the community . Our main goal for the semester is to attend the NetImpact conference in Portland, OR at the end of October. NetImpact is an international organization that provides invaluable resources and opportunities for young entrepreneurs. With that said we are exploring the opportunity to start a NetImpact chapter here at HSU. Natural Resources Club
The Natural Resources Club provides opportunities for students at HSU to be directly involved in community: volunteering as a "work force" for a variety of local government agencies and non-profit organizations. Coming to meetings allows you to be informed on the coming events, touch-base with fellow students, discuss ideas, and share experiences. Every Saturday there is an event that the club is involved with which could include but not be limited to stream bank stabilization, invasive plant removal, highway and coastal clean-ups, spawning ground replenishment, and trail-work. The Natural Resources Club serves as an example that people can make a positive change in the natural environment. The club also provides a voluntary member-run coffee cart in the natural resources building. We provide coffee, tea, granola bars, dairy and non-dairy creamers, organic sugar, honey, and bagels (brought to you by Los Bagels) along with re-useable mugs! The cart's profits help the club attend natural resource conferences, help pay for food at some of our restoration events, and are used for other projects. Did you ever wonder how the campus recycling program started?
Back in the 70’s, when the Natural Resources Club started, the campus recycling program was the first project initiated! What a success.
The club revised its name after a drop in membership in the 80’s, and called it the “Natural Resource Planning Club.” Community and student services became the focus. By the mid 90’s the club had joined the California Department of Fish and Game volunteer restoration program, opening up a range of opportunities.
Presently, the club collaborates with many other organizations, outdoor education and outreach programs within the community. The club continues to seek out new ways of being involved and volunteering for the surrounding community. Skills acquired through hands-on experience are beneficial, should students choose a major in any related field.

The Oldest Student Run Film Festival in the World!
<strong style="color:blue;">Our mission at the Humboldt Film Festival is to expose independent filmmaking to a diverse range of viewers, and to break away from mainstream filmmaking; thus coming forth with a deeper appreciation for this medium of cinema as a whole. That being said, we also want to enrich educational experiences and learning opportunities for HSU students by allowing them to focus their creative and productive energies on the development and presentation of the world’s oldest student-run film festival. The integrity of the festival is built on the unique blend of academic interests, cultural backgrounds, and the creative talents of the students. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that the festival maintains its longstanding tradition as a student-run event - a designation that helps it stand out among a sea of similar festivals. The Humboldt Film Festival serves as a vehicle for the exhibition of such independent films and DV works that are commonly regarded as an art form rather than a commercial venture; and unlike commercial films, which often target a specific audience for monetary gain, the independent world of filmmakers must finance much of its own work to secure an audience for it.Check Us Out April 16-21, 2012

About the Club
We are an international festival, and showcase films and animated shorts from every continent that can’t be found anywhere else. Throughout the year, we will also be hosting many fundraising events that will all be film related.

The Humboldt Film Festival has been bringing independent and alternative short films to Humboldt County for forty-four years. As the world’s oldest student-run film festival we have created a unique venue for traditional films and alternative digital media that enjoys an international reputation for supporting and celebrating independent filmmakers working in traditional, experimental and non-traditional modes. Founded in 1967 by a group of film-loving Humboldt State University students the Humboldt Film Festival has expanded over the years to feature several days of public screenings, workshops and presentations by guest filmmakers each spring. The festival promotes the art of film, not only as a means of entertainment, but also as a vehicle for self-expression and a stimulus for dialogue about social, political and cultural issues.

A.W.A.R.E (Always Working for Animal Rights and Equality)
We are an animal rights group on campus and our main goal is to promote the moral and ethical treatment of animals. Psychology Club and Psi Chi
Psychology Club and Psi Chi work together to give students the opportunity to learn more about psychology through guest speakers, field trips, and witty dialogue with one another. Fundraising and social events occur frequently. Social events help you network and relax with others, while fundraising allows the club to provide some financial assistance to those who wish to go to WPA, a super-fun psychology conference. Any student can join Psychology Club. Psi Chi has a more rigorous admission process in accordance with its status as an honor society. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required, plus second-semester sophomore standing and a number of units in psychology. For more information, email us or attend one of our meetings. Students can be a member of both clubs at the same time.

LAMBDA THETA PHI LATIN FRATERNITY INC.
On December 1, 1975, history was made history on a college campus, which would transcend other colleges/universities throughout the United States; history which would have a positive impact on the Latino community and our nation; history which would forever change the Greek system, more specifically, the entity known as a fraternity. On December 1, 1975, Lambda Theta Phi was founded on the campus of Kean College in Union, New Jersey. In 1975, there were no Latino fraternities in existence in the United States. The Greek-letter organizations of the time primarily catered to Anglo and African-American students and graduates. Lambdas founders, as men of vision, realized there was a need to unite the Latino students, develop their leadership skills, impart upon them the value of an education, and instill in them a commitment to their community and culture. The traditional student club would not suffice to accomplish such lofty goals. Hence, Latino unity and brotherhood would be achieved through a long recognized institution the fraternity. This newest addition to the Greek system would be the first in the nation, by identity and by name: Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity, Incorporated. The ideals of this brotherhood are the following: Academic Excellence; Brotherhood; Leadership; Latino Unity; Service. On a daily basis, our brothers live up to these ideals, as set forth by fourteen young Latino men decades ago. At the undergraduate level, our brothers are active within the Fraternity and in other student organizations. Our brothers perform community service, promote our culture by sponsoring events which highlight and celebrate our heritage, participate in educational workshops, and enjoy many social programs. As a result of their active participation in every aspect of college life, our undergraduates are developing their organizational, communication, and leadership skills, all while pursuing the coveted diploma. Our younger Lambdas are receiving the training and competence to serve as the future leaders of our brotherhood, community, and nation. At the professional level, among our ranks you will find attorneys, doctors, and engineers. Our brothers are shaping young minds as educators and as dedicated fathers. The men in brown and white are defending this country at home and abroad in the area of law enforcement and in the armed forces. We are strengthening our countrys economy as entrepreneurs. Our brothers are teaching leadership as coaches, mentors, and community activists. Events performed as an Interest Group are not credited to Chapter Requirements once they become a Colony.
4. Upon completing the Interest Group requirements, the group will compile proof of their activities and mail it to the National Director of Expansion. The interested gentlemens groups shall formally submit a letter requesting official recognition as an interest group of Lambda Theta Phi.
I. Package must be submitted in a binder with the professionalism and pride that went into accomplishing the requirements. The binder shall contain a section for each of the above stated requirements and an index at the beginning in addition to; the initial interest application, official transcripts, each interested gentlemens work/school schedule.
II. Minimum of 6 interested gentlemen to begin induction.
III. Must have required dues prior to beginning induction.
IV. Recognition from the university.
V. Complete a contact list of all interested gentlemen; Name, Year, GPA, Major and anticipated or actual graduation date {e.g… May 06, Jan 07, May 07).
VI. Letter of good standing from sector/regional expansion.
VII. The interest group must be comprised of gentlemen with no less than a 2.5/4.0 GPA (not collectively)
VIII. Minimum of 2 Interested Gentlemen involved in another organization.
IX. Well written interest group history from early formation to present.
X. Meet and exceed requirements listed above and submit proof (picture/flyer) of events.
XI. At least 4 of the interested gentlemen must not be graduating seniors (has at least one full year or 30 credits left to complete Bachelors degree).
XII. An action plan for completing set activity requirements.

Humboldt State Mixed Martial Arts Club
Fall Semester 2011 Schedule TBA Usually within 2-3 weeks after the start of the semester we will be given times for mat use. In the meantime get on the email list and join the facebook page we will keep in touch. Work on all aspects of Mixed Martial Arts in a friendly recreational and educational setting. Additionally we all gather to watch PPV events, participate in weekend trips, workouts, BBQs and movie nights.

-Every week we plan on alternating between, boxing, wrestling and jiu jitsu for the first hour of the time slot, we will then have open mat for the remainder of the time.
-These practices are aimed at an everyone is welcome skill level and will illustrate some of the sports individual aspects as well as in relation to mixed martial arts. Generally we have a warm up, stretch, technique workout and then some live rolling. We end the workouts with a small cardio session and then there is open mat.
-Open mat is basically time to roll, wrestle and practice your skills with others in a respectful and friendly manner. Additionally open mat is a great time to ask anyone to help you practice a particular technique and develop more skills.

Society of Women Engineers Student Chapter at Humboldt State University
HSU SWE Mission Statement: To support women in science and engineering; to encourage awareness of environmental engineering and to provide opportunities for students to develop professional skills. The Society of Women Engineers encourages women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers and leaders, expands the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life, and demonstrates the value of diversity.
About the Club
Students chartered a student section of the Society of Women Engineers on the campus of Humboldt State University in December 1997. In 1999, HSU won best new student section. Members have won best technical paper in the region and placed nationally. Also HSU has obtained a SWE grant for outreach. Over 150 environmental engineering students were involved in the Humboldt State SWE flume project. A flume is an interactive tool that engineers use to model water systems. The SWE flume is specifically designed for children. It is permanently housed at the Redwood Discovery Museum in Eureka, CA. Currently the club focuses on outreach and professional development of engineering students.

BGSA helps arrange and fund the Biology Department�s seminar series featuring researchers from throughout the country. To raise funds, the BGSA operates a coffee table in the lobby of Science B featuring locally roasted organic coffee, juices, muffins, and bagels with several yummy toppings. The coffee table is open from 8:00 am to 11:00 am Monday through Friday. We also provide social activities such as pub nights, potlucks, bowling, etc. Faculty and students relax and interact at an annual potluck barbecue to greet the incoming class.

Hopefully we can increase carpooling, friendly informing of one another about proper surf etiquette, group activities and possibly surf trips, all for the good of each one of us who wants to maximize the benefits that our ocean has to offer.

Colleges Against Cancer
American Cancer Society's Colleges Against Cancer is a nationwide collaboration of college students, faculty, and staff dedicated to eliminating cancer by initiating and supporting American Cancer Society programs in college communities.
About the Club
Our Colleges Against Cancer chapter supports the American Cancer Society’s mission by promoting activities in three main areas. Those areas include the Relay for Life, Cancer Control, and Advocacy.
Relay For Life. Our club participates in fundraisers to raise money for the Youth Relay for Life in Eureka, California. The event takes place in May every year. The exact date for 2010 will be posted at a later date. Anyone who wants to participate in the event can contact us for more information. Currently, we are selling See’s Candy Bars and are planning to do a family fundraiser night at Round Table Pizza in Arcata, Ca.
Cancer Control. Our club not only helps raise money for cancer research, we also educate our community about cancer awareness. Our three main focuses are: Breast cancer awareness; Anti-tobacco awareness; and Healthy living behaviors, including nutrition, physical activity, reproductive health, and sun safety. As an example, our club did a display in the Humboldt State Library showing the negative effects of tobacco and some healthy alternatives to smoking. We also help our campus by letting smokers around campus know where the designated smoking areas are located.
Advocacy. Our advocacy efforts increase awareness of American Cancer Society legislative priorities by maintaining current information on nationwide, statewide, and local advocacy initiatives and developing plans and projects suitable for our campus community.

HSU Takes Back the Tap is part of a national movement to reduce the consumption of one time use plastic water bottles. Currently our club is helping to advocate for the needs of Former Foster Youth students on campus at HSU with administration and will be developing a focus group to advise program development. We prefer individuals with dance, cheer, and tumbling experience but a lack of said experience is not a detriment. We have three squads : cheer, dance, and pep. Computer Science Club
Have you ever considered how much of your day is spent interacting with some type of technology? You are using some form of technology every time you get in the car, when you use your phone, turn on your computer, listen to the radio, etc. the list is endless! The goal of the Computer Science Club is to help you to better understand the devices that are such a BIG part of our daily lives. We want to help you find ways to fully utilize these devices, and show that they are as useful as they are fun!
About the Club
The club tries to develop at least one project or hold one event in the course of the semester. In Spring 2010, we held a Computer Tech Day, where we encouraged our peers and HSU faculty to bring us their questions and/or devices that needed minor repairs. This was a great “real world” learning experience for us all! This semester we are currently developing a parking space detector project. We will share the details very soon!
Also, each semester there are a group of students that like to get together for LAN parties. These are a blast! They can range from Guitar Hero (or similar) on a projector screen to many types PC games. If this is of interest to you, please contact the club for when and where information. You do not need to be a member to come to the parties.

We are not accepting individual show proposals for the rest of the current semester. Applications for Spring 2012 shows will be made available at the Art Department Office and around the Art Building in November 2011.
About the Club
Student Access Gallery exists to help art students at HSU learn how real-world galleries function and display the work of our talented student artists on campus. We provide hands-on experience preparing artwork and paperwork, and working to get HSU's artists attention from the local media.
