2024 Workshop

Week 1: July 1-5
Week 2: July 8-12

At Cal Poly Humboldt in Arcata, California USA

Location of Workshop

Cal Poly Humboldt is located in Arcata, California. Arcata is on the Pacific Coast about 10 miles north of Eureka and 100 miles south of the California-Oregon border.

Traveling by Car

If you are driving to the workshop from the south, take US 101 north from San Francisco. Driving distance from San Francisco to Cal Poly Humboldt is about 280 miles. Driving time is in the range of 6 to 7 hours. It is a very pleasant trip through great stretches of beautiful redwoods -- most of it freeway driving. There are clear markings on 101 in Arcata to the University.

Once on the campus, there will be signs to help you get to the dorms for sign-in.

If you are coming from the north, you can come down US 101 -- which is beautiful but slow -- or down I-5 to Grants Pass. At Grants Pass, take US 199 west to Crescent City, and from there, US 101 to Humboldt at Arcata. Driving distance is about 160 miles from Grants Pass. It is again a beautiful trip through majestic redwoods. However, this is a relatively slow, winding road -- not a freeway.

Estimated driving time is 4 to 5 hours. Again the off-ramp to the University is clearly marked and once on the campus follow the signs to the dorms for sign-in.

Another possibility is to take CA 299 from Redding to US 101 just north of Arcata. This is a slow, but very scenic road through the redwoods. Distance is about 135 miles. Driving time is 3 to 4 hours. Go south on US 101 to the Cal Poly Humboldt off-ramp and follow signs to the workshop.

Traveling by Airplane

The Arcata/Eureka Airport (ACV) serves the Arcata/Eureka area. It is located about ten miles north of Arcata. In general, workshop participants who fly in do not find it necessary to have a car during the week and take advantage of taxi service from and to the airport.

Arcata and Nearby Area

The city of Arcata is located in Humboldt County, on California's Redwood Coast, at the juncture of California Highway 101 and 299 West, the Trinity Scenic Byway. The city is approximately 289 miles north of San Francisco, 150 miles west of Redding, and 6 miles north of Eureka.

Arcata is a popular tourist area. The climate is coastal, which means "be ready for anything." It could be sunny, but is often fog-drenched. Many participants arrive early for the workshop, or stay in the area afterwards to enjoy the area. There are many restaurants and things to do -- you can ask when you get there.
