Setting up Basic GIS Programs

Disclaimer – Installing of any part of this software may render your computer unusable. Please do not continue unless you are able to recover from a corrupted system. In other words – please do not continue unless you have all your data backed up. Installing the entire set of GIS software will require as much as 30GB of free hard disk. This software will not run (well) on older computers with small amounts of RAM.

This file resides at: \\cnrs-sw\AdministratorsOnly\GIS-and-Mapping\GuideToInstallingBasicGIS-Software.doc

First install Microsoft .Net 3.5 (this makes stuff you will need later install automatically).

IF YOU ARE INSTALLING ON A NETWORKED CAMPUS COMPUTER PLEASE POINT TO THE LICENSE SERVER:    arcgis.humboldt.edu

If you are going to install a keyless license manager on the machine (LAPTOP), install ArcGIS Desktop (with no license manager) first, then install the keyless license manager. Use the Desktop Administrator to point to the new license server you just installed on your computer. If you install the keyless license manager first it often causes a serious run-a-round to get it to work.

For a laptop ArcGIS  license you must contact cnrsitc [at] humboldt [dot] edu.
