Schedule/Itinerary
On Campus:
All-day mandatory orientation, including lectures on international travel preparation and introductory lectures about Costa Rica and the fieldsite: Sunday, March 27, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., in BSS 310.
In Costa Rica:
- June 8: Students and staff arrive at San Jose National Airport, San Jose, Costa Rica. Students are responsible for arranging their own travel to Costa Rica and for paying costs associated with this travel. Once in Costa Rica, students are to acquire and pay for land transportation to Hotel Cacts in San Jose. Taxis are readily available at San Jose National Airport. TAs will meet students at the Hotel Cacts, where they and the students spend the night. Note: all stays by students and faculty at Hotel Cacts have been prearranged through the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS), and are covered in student’s program fees.
- June 9: Group arrives at La Selva (students and TAs by La Selva bus; Instructor Mary Glenn and Keith Bensen arrive a few hours earlier by car). First field day commences with orientation, tours, etc.
- June 10 – June 27: Students are in field and lectures 0600-1200 and 1300-1700 Monday through Saturday. Sundays are free for recreational and touring activities. Students will stay in dormitory style field cabins, with male and females having separate dorms.
- June 28: End of program. TAs and students take a La Selva bus back to Hotel Cacts. The bus has been reserved through OTS (see attached contract).
- June 29: Students depart to the airport or other (course unrelated) destinations. Students are responsible for arranging their own travel from this point forward. TAs can assist students with arranging for taxi transport for students to the airport, if the students request help.
Independent Travel Policy
The above course itinerary indicates all planned in-county (and between county) travel for students. Students who wish to travel independently after the program ends will do so independently. During the course, students will not be allowed to travel independently outside of the immediate area surrounding the La Selva Biological Station (essentially nearby towns). Those who choose to leave the course before it is complete will be required to sign the "Release Early from Program" documents provided by the Study Abroad Office.
