Student & Faculty Collaboration

Real-World Applications

The Economics Department produces research studies based in our local community. Our program is renowned for a hands-on, collaborative atmosphere for students and faculty.

In 2010 Erick Eschker and worked with some of our majors on several projects including an entrepreneur survey identifying key determinants of small business success, and a preliminary analysis of how economic activity has changed within Humboldt County over the last ten years.

One of the best-known ongoing, community-based research projects at HSU is the Humboldt Economic Index. The Index has tracked six sectors of the Humboldt County economy (employment, energy consumption, home sales, lumber manufacturing, occupancy rates at hotels/motels/inns, and retail sales) since 1994. Under the supervision of a member of the faculty, each month students gather the data and provide analysis and commentary in a report on the Internet. This project is supported by donations from private financial institutions and other organizations.

A good example of a recent community-based research project is the Economic Impact of HSU on the Humboldt County Economy, which involved a collaboration between faculty and students from the Department of Economics, and the HSU Office of the President.

In March, 2008 Economics majors and faculty taped a one hour and twenty minute discussion panel on the current state of the economy. They talked about recession, the credit crunch, and housing. You can listen to what they had to say here.
