Econ Forum
Join students and faculty in regular discussions about important

Annual Departmental Awards Ceremony and Alumni Reception
Each Spring the Department
of Economics will honor student scholarship and award winners:
Christopher Thornberg, PhD, Beacon Economics and formerly of UCLA
Anderson Forecast presented "Real Estate Bubbles and California's
Economic Growth" on Wednesday, November 30th, 2006.
Scholar of the Year Lecture
Professor Steven Hackett of the Department of Economics, was selected
as HSU's Scholar of the Year for 2005-2006. A lecture and benefit
dinner was held in his honor on Thursday, September 15, 2005.
CSU Student Research Competition
On April 29 and 30, 2005, Economics majors Andrea Walters and Laura
Lampley represented the Department of Economics and HSU at the
system-wide California State University student research competition at
Cal State, Sacramento. Laura and Andrea presented their work on the Index
of Economics Activity for Humboldt County, a report
they produce each month
under the supervision of HSU Economics faculty member Dr. Erick
Eschker.
Social Security Debate
On April 20th, 2005, Economics majors participated in a formal
parliamentary-style debate. The government team, represented by Lara
Remke,
Soren Messner-Zidell, and Andrea Walters, were arguing in favor of the
following: Resolved, the United States government should
partially privatize Social Security retirement accounts. The
opposition team, represented by Julia West, Ory Harris, and Steve
Dixon, sought to refute government's case. The event was sponsored by
the Department of Economics and the College of Professioal Studies.
