Each year, Environmental Resources Engineering (ERE) students participate in numerous local, regional, national and international competitions. Some of these competitions are described below.

International Math Modeling Competitions

The Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM) and the Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) are sponsored by The Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications (COMAP). Over the years ERE students have successfully competed in these international competitions. The students have 4 days to complete the research, calculations and writing needed to create a report describing their solution to the problem posed by COMAP. Reports are rated to be Outstanding, Meritorious, Honorable Mention and Successful Participant.

International Math Modeling Competitions

National Hydrogen Association (NHA)

The NHA competition challenges university students to produce imaginative designs of innovative hydrogen systems. Each year there are one winning and four honorable mention teams. In 2004, the Cal Poly Humboldt team received an honorable mention. In 2005, our students won the competition and were invited to present their design to the California EPA and the Chevron Corporation.

National Hydrogen Association (NHA)

American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Local Design Competition

Each year, the North Coast Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) sponsors a design competition limited to ERE students. The design problem is usually a local environmental engineering challenge. Cash prizes are awarded to the top three design teams.

Society of Women Engineers (SWE)

At the national level, SWE sponsors many competitions, including Best Technical Paper, Best Video, Best New Student Section. The Humboldt SWE members have successfully competed in many of these competitions.

American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Water Treatment Competition

The Water Treatment Competition engages students in water quality analysis where engineering practices and critical thinking must be used to design effective techniques to solve common water quality problems. Competition rules and water constituents are provided early by the Water Environment Foundation (WEF).
