Courses Offered

Currently, the Writing/Composition Program offers four different courses: English 102&103, English 104, English 200, and English 215. Please review the descriptions below to learn more about each course. 

 

English 102 and English 103: Composition and Rhetoric A and B
  • Meets for two-semesters with the same cohort of students
  • Offers a moderately paced first-year writing course
  • Provides more time to complete and more support for assignments
  • Begins with shorter (3-4 page) pieces
  • Builds to more substantial (5-7 page) argumentative essays that integrate multiple research sources
  • Intended for students who will benefit from more time to build academic reading and revising skills
  • Enrolls 21 students per section
  • Earns six credits and satisfies the GE Area A Written Communication requirement when successfully completed with a passing Assessment Portfolio


English 104: Accelerated Composition and Rhetoric

  • Meets for one-semester
  • Offers an aggressively paced first-year writing course
  • Focuses on rhetorical analysis and more substantial (5-7 page) argumentative essays that integrate multiple sources
  • Intended for self-motivated students who are confident with the rigors and expectations of college-level reading and writing
  • Enrolls 25 students per section
  • Earns three credits and satisfies the GE Area A Written Communication requirement when successfully completed with a passing Assessment Portfolio
 
English 200: Academic Writing and Revision
  • Required for students who successfully progress in English 102&103 or English 104 but need to revise their Assessment Portfolio for (re)submission
  • Focuses on individual and group instruction in revision of Assessment Portfolio
  • Culminates in (re)submission of the Assessment Portfolio
  • Earns three credits during an eight week or sixteen week meeting schedule
  • Enrolls 24 students per section

 

English 215: Information Literacy and Writing Seminar
  • Offers a one-semester cross-disciplinary writing and research course
  • Earns two units of elective credit
  • Meets one day a week in computer lab
  • Involves student-driven curriculum and pacing
  • Includes instruction in and support for research methods and digital literacies
  • Offers practice using online writing resources
  • Intended to provide support for the reading, writing, and research efforts for students in any HSU course
  • Enrolls 18 students per section
