How to Apply

Apply:  Complete the California State University Graduate Application online at CSU Mentor. A $55.00 application fee is required at time of application. The CSU Application Fee Waiver is no longer available for Master's Applications.  If you are unable to pay with a credit card, a check can be mailed to the Office of Graduate Admissions.

Letters of Recommendation:  Three letters of recommendation are required.  These are submitted online through CSU Mentor, Page 11.  If you have questions, please contact the Graduate Admissions Office, 707.826.6250.

Transcripts:  One official transcript is required from any college or university you have ever attended.  You can either have them sent directly to you (remember that official transcripts must be in their original sealed envelope), or directly to Graduate Admissions.

Transcripts should indicate a cumulative GPA of no less than 3.0.

Transcript Exceptions (Humboldt State University students only): You do not need to request transcripts for any work completed at Humboldt State University. If you were enrolled at Humboldt as a regular matriculated student within the past 5 years, we will still have your file.  You do not need to request transcripts for college work completed elsewhere, unless you completed that college work after you left Humboldt.

Test Scores:  Scores must be submitted from the general test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), taken within the last 5 years. (School Code 4345). Be sure to take the test with enough time to have Educational Testing Service (ETS) officially report the grades to us.  This may take anywhere from 3-5 weeks.

Statement of Purpose:  Write a short essay (no longer than two pages, single-spaced) in which you:

  1. Describe your personal background and your educational development, and
  2. Discuss your academic and career goals and explain how participating in the graduate English program at Humboldt State University will help you achieve them.

Note: You can cut and paste a Word Document into the Statement of Purpose section of CSU Mentor.

Writing Sample, to be sent directly to the English Department:  Provide a representative sample (no more than 15 pages) of your academic writing.

Application Deadlines:

CSU Mentor closes for Fall semester on February 1.  For Fall admission, all supplemental materials must be submitted by March 1.

CSU Mentor closes for Spring semester on August 31.  For Spring admission, all supplemental materials must be submitted by November 1.

Applicants for the Masters International Program are only accepted for Fall admission.

Note:  CSU Mentor occasionally opens outside these time frames.  Please contact the English Department if you wish to apply to our program, but missed the Mentor deadline.  Applicants should always do their best to meet all stated deadlines for application materials.
