1. Dialogue on Racism, White Supremacy, and Anti-Racism, Sept. 10. The goal of this dialogue--sponsored by the Dean of Students Office and the Office of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion--is to provide a space for our campus community to ask questions, to share how these incidents have impacted them, and discuss how the campus community can work together to address racial and social justice issues. We will be dividing groups into breakout sessions based on how participants identify themselves racially to minimize the harm. Sept.

1. Black Liberation Month activities. This year’s theme is “Reclaiming Our Collective Consciousness,” with the idea of exploring the ties that bind Black Culture: art, music, dance, food, health, wellness, beauty, self-love, intellectualism, and the African Diaspora. Keynote speaker Dr. Cornel West  (Feb. 7, 7pm) is Professor of the Practice of Public Philosophy at Harvard University and Professor Emeritus at Princeton University.

1. Group Facilitation Skills Workshop, Nov. 5-7. Participants in this three-day workshop will be trained to a high standard of technical competence in the design and management of collaborative, participatory meetings – especially when members hail from diverse backgrounds and constituencies. Cost is $200 for students. Participants must be available to attend all three days. Space is limited. The required workbook, Facilitator’s Guide to Participatory Decision-Making (Third Edition) by Sam Kaner et al, may be purchased for $25 from the course registrar, or purchased online.

1. Free public talk, Sept. 19, “Sixty Years of Community Based Forest Management in Arcata.” 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient Mark Andre (’79, Natural Resources Planning & Interpretation) will be speaking on "Sixty Years of Community Based Forest Management in Arcata" followed by a question and answer session. Mark is the Director of Environmental Services for the City of Arcata and a registered Professional Forester. Because of his efforts the Arcata Community Forest, established in 1955, has grown considerably and is nationally considered as a model community forest.

1. Research presentation money available; deadline Sept. 9. The College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences has issued a call for funds for university-related travel occurring between November 1-June 30. If you are a full-time student traveling to present research, you may apply for funds. The deadline to apply is September 9.

1. Visting Writers’ Series, April 9. As part of the English Department’s Visiting Writers’ Series, Joseph Marshall III (Sicangu Lakota) will present “Lakota Storytelling & History: Leading a Meaningful Life.” His newest book is “Crazy Horse Weeps: The Challenge of Being Lakota in White America.” Tuesday, April 9, 5-7 p.m., Native American Forum. 2. Lecture: “Systemic and Ethical Transformation: Changing the Why, How and Who of Agriculture,” April 9.

2. Paid Library Special Collections Internship. Special Collections invites currently enrolled Humboldt students (undergraduate or graduate) to apply for the Atkinson Family Library Scholar Internship for Spring 2019. This is a semester-long paid internship.

1. Social Justice Summit, March 3-4. The Humboldt MultiCultural Center presents the 23nd Annual Social Justice Summit. Our vision for this year’s Social Justice Summit was to highlight tools for non-violent expressions. The theme “Art as Social Activism” seeks to provide tools for effective advocacy, artful expression, and active ways to change the world through the words we use. Words are tools that have shaped the world around us. The Summit aspires to provide tools for emotional, artful expression, tools to shape voices for change.

Leanne Lynch will defend her project this Friday, December 2nd at 2:00pm in Founders Hall 108.  The title of her project is “Access to Recreational Open Space in Patterson, CA: A Geospatial Analysis Utilizing Geographic Information Systems.”

E&C student Kristian Salgado recently presented at the Imperial County Environmental Health Leadership Summit, one of only a handful of community-organized environmental justice conferences in California. See the attached document for a full summary of the conference and Kristian's involvement. Good work, Kristian!

In 2015, a new field-based course (EC 630 – Mattole Field Institute) introduced the 2015 E&C cohort to place-based social science research through an immersive 5-day trip to the Mattole Valley. In 2016, new E&C students again had the opportunity to take the course. These students read a number of books and articles to introduce them to academic concepts and to the economic and restoration history of the Mattole, and met for an all-day discussion on the Humboldt campus August 14th.
